2. •A seasoned medical professional, Charles Canver, MD, currently serves as the
chief medical officer and vice president for medical affairs at the Presence United
Samaritans Medical Center. Specializing in cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Charles
Canver is also a member of The American Board of Surgery (ABS).
3. •Founded in 1937, ABS strives to promote surgical excellence. To meet this goal,
this nonprofit organization certifies surgeons who have passed a defined standard
of training, knowledge, and education in the field of surgery. To ensure this, ABS
offers various exams for board certification and maintenance of certification, one
of which is the General Surgery Qualifying Examination (QE).
4. •An annual computer-based exam, QE is one of the two exams required for
general surgery certification. Consisting of 300 multiple-choice questions, the
exam is designed to evaluate the surgeon’s knowledge on the principles and
applied science of general surgery. Held at several testing facilities across the
United States, the exam lasts for eight hours, and the results are mailed after three
to four weeks.
