During November & December 2013 91
year 9 pupils took part in a project for
the University of Bristol
Aim of the project:
 To discover whether
the environment yr 9
pupils live in affects
how physically active
they are.
 Discover where yr 9
pupils go to be active
and why.

The Project

The pupils were asked:
 To fill in a
questionnaire about
where they live and
what they do
 Wear an activity &
GPS monitor for a
week

What was Involved
44 mins

On average, Yr 9 pupils were
moderately active for 29 minutes a day.


The

girls were slightly more active (30
minutes) than the boys(28 minutes)
Pupils

in tutor group “W” were more
active (43 minutes) than pupils in other
tutor groups (26 minutes). Well done “W”!
Time spent being active was higher on
week days (31 minutes) compared with
weekend days (25 minutes).


The recommendation for health
is 60 minutes of moderate to
vigorous activity per day!




reported eating 5 or more
portions of fruit and
vegetables on average per
day. Keep it up!
In general girls reported
eating more (6.2 pieces)
than boys (5.5 pieces),
with tutor group “C”
eating the most (7.3
pieces)!

Eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetables as
part of your daily diet is really important, and a
great way of getting all of the nutrients and

Join one of the FREE active after school clubs on
offer. For example squash, rugby, netball,
hockey, football or table tennis!!
If you usually travel to school by car ask to be
dropped a bit further away from school so you
can walk the last 5-10 minutes.
If you usually travel by bus, walk to catch it one
stop further than your usual one.
54% of pupils reported eating crisps, sweets,
chocolate and biscuits more than 3 times a
week. You could try to reduce this to twice a
week or less!

Yr 9 Activity Levels and Diet Study

  • 1. During November & December 2013 91 year 9 pupils took part in a project for the University of Bristol
  • 2. Aim of the project:  To discover whether the environment yr 9 pupils live in affects how physically active they are.  Discover where yr 9 pupils go to be active and why. The Project The pupils were asked:  To fill in a questionnaire about where they live and what they do  Wear an activity & GPS monitor for a week What was Involved
  • 3. 44 mins On average, Yr 9 pupils were moderately active for 29 minutes a day.  The girls were slightly more active (30 minutes) than the boys(28 minutes) Pupils in tutor group “W” were more active (43 minutes) than pupils in other tutor groups (26 minutes). Well done “W”! Time spent being active was higher on week days (31 minutes) compared with weekend days (25 minutes).  The recommendation for health is 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per day!
  • 4.   71% 65% 71% Overall, year 9 pupils reported eating 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables on average per day. Keep it up! In general girls reported eating more (6.2 pieces) than boys (5.5 pieces), with tutor group “C” eating the most (7.3 pieces)! Eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetables as part of your daily diet is really important, and a great way of getting all of the nutrients and 78% 69% 49% 57% vitamins that your body and mind need for healthy growth and development!
  • 5.  Most people (90%) use motorised transport to get to school  9% of pupils walk to school  1% of pupils cycled to school
  • 6.     Join one of the FREE active after school clubs on offer. For example squash, rugby, netball, hockey, football or table tennis!! If you usually travel to school by car ask to be dropped a bit further away from school so you can walk the last 5-10 minutes. If you usually travel by bus, walk to catch it one stop further than your usual one. 54% of pupils reported eating crisps, sweets, chocolate and biscuits more than 3 times a week. You could try to reduce this to twice a week or less!
