Studies show that many projects either fail outright or fail to meet most of their objectives. There are a myriad of possible reasons why this might be the case. Very often, organizations go looking for a culprit and sometimes blame the project manager or even the very concept of project management itself. Sometimes they decide to “fix” the problem by getting all the project managers certified. Or they decide to standardize on a certain tool. And while certification and standardization are laudable things, they do not necessarily address the central problem or problems. This presentation will discuss the top ten reasons why projects fail and briefly discuss solutions to each problem. We will see how such areas as estimates, scope and “the accidental project manager” contribute to the problem.

Given that the "Waterfall" process model has been dominant in the IT industry for many decades, how many IT and project management professionals are aware that it's inventor warned the world in 1970 that Waterfall is "risky and invites failure"? From a risk management perspective, is waterfall ever an appropriate choice for complex IT initiatives given what we know now? In this session we will outline how, as a risk management strategy, using the waterfall model for non-trivial systems development initiatives is systemically high risk as compared with the Iterative Incremental Development (IID) model that has been used in pockets of the IT industry since the late 1950's. Today, many organisations use the IID strategy under the umbrella term of 'Agile'. The majority of these employ Lean Product Development patterns that were first described in the Harvard Business Review in 1986 using a metaphor borrowed from the game of rugby i.e. 'Scrum'. If you are not using a disciplined agile approach, are you facing more risk as you approach a high-stakes deadline than you need to? The varied contexts that we work in come with varied types of risk. For a green fields date-driven release, the primary risk may be cost and schedule related. For teams designing a new product for an emerging market, the primary risks may be business risk. For teams doing innovative R&D, the primary risk may technical risk. For a young team in a new technical or business domain, the primary risk may be social risk. In this session, we will use real world examples of such varied challenges to illustrate how risk-tuned Agile helped us to manage risk effectively. Whilst we will always have to deal with risk to create value, the good news is that there are now many powerful risk management techniques that can be overlaid on top of IID to tune your development process to the type of risk you face. The question is: which ones are most appropriate for the type of risk you are facing? In this workshop we outline a series of powerful risk management tools that tune an agile development process to effectively manage the type of risk that you face.

Consider this the third in a series of extended posts on project management of large complex projects. In the first post, I asked if it is time to revisit PM theory. In the second post, my "Physics of Projects" article, I make the case that just as Einstein's theory was needed at scale since classical theory wouldn't suffice perhaps too such a new theory at scale is required in PM. In this article (not light reading or for the faint of heart) I make the case for some of what needs to happen at scale by reviewing the evolution of general management theory and the theories of projects and project management. I expect this to be controversial in some quarters so it is heavily footnoted. The last time I did a comparable piece on systemic innovation in the engineering and construction industry, I had the premise challenged (we are very innovative) and several cases made for incrementalism. In the article I make a number of points: • we can learn more from general management theory than we have • foundations for PM are weak.......we need clearly defined strategic business outcomes, better owner readiness, better baseline modeling and stronger focus on driving out biases in planning • focus on flows is more important than just focusing on tasks • Stakeholders shape large complex projects more than we give them credit for.....this leads to multifinality • New flows are created by stakeholders....influencing flows.....that can directly act on SBOs, transformational flows and tasks, and each other creating new induced flows

one If I was a Project Manager, what three qualities would I want? First and foremost, I would want to have the fortitude to accept my failures and the strength to drive forward despite of the failures. What made someone like Colonel Sanders (Kentucky Fried Chicken) successful? President Abraham Lincoln? Walt Disney? Vera Wang? All of these people were very successful people, but they also had many failures. So why were they successful? The answer is that they were not weak and crumbled at the first sign of failure. They were focused on their goal and they pushed forward to their success. That is the type of Project Manager I would like to be. The second quality would be to communicate effectively. Have you ever had one of those bosses that you were always trying to figure out what he/she wants you to do? I have, and it came from lack of communication. As a Project Manager, I need to speak effectively so that there is absolutely no misunderstanding on what needs to be done. Finally, I would want to have great people skills. A Project Manager needs to be able to listen actively to what others are saying, help develop new approaches for solving problems, and then persuade others to work toward achieving project goals (Schwalbe, K., 2013, p23). As a Project Manager, I would be working with people of different cultures. Understanding people will increase the chances of the project succeeding. Any of the three characteristics above, either by themselves or in combination with each other, can also lead to project failure. So how do you become a great communicator, a great people person, and thick skinned? You work on it. Take a college course on communications or on people skills. Talk to your current employees and friends to get feedback from them on how you can improve. Then you devise a plan to start implementing their advice into your everyday life. Two The three keys to Project Success seem to have the three factors that all successful projects have in common. Each of these factors is key to any project’s success. Each project can be viewed as a tripod. The three legs must be in place for the tripod to stand sturdily. In a systems project, these legs are critical success factors consisting of the following: Top management support A sound methodology Solid technical leadership by someone who has successfully completed a similar project. Additional characteristic in IT Project Management are, cost, quality, speed and risk. However it is not possible to have the best of all four factors. Specifically, you cannot have a system built inexpensively, of high quality, built quickly and with little or no risk. Most discussion of these factors only include the first three. It is possible to build a high-quality system quickly, at a relatively low cost by cutting corner and doing little or no testing. Base on a research carried out by the Coverdale Organization (Cushing, 2002), the respondents identified estimation mistakes, uncle.

Paul was a very highly respected expert in project and programme management, a popular speaker, spreading the word about programme management throughout the UK and Europe. Delivering Value through Benefits – John Chapman John says “At the time we wrote the original manuscript projects were focused on the technology, people and resources. There wasn’t much focus on benefits. Perhaps that was a reflection on project delivery. Since then, organisational competencies in programme and project management had grown, there was increased ‘brain space’ to understand the impact of the change. There is now a recognition that IT systems are enablers helping to solve business problems. Projects create deliverables, outputs or in PRINCE terms, products. Another analogy is baking a cake – we actually need to eat it if we are to derive the benefit. People is difficult – Adrian Pyne Adrian says “I am talking about the PEOPLE stuff. How people behave, as individuals or in groups, namely the culture and environment of the project. Well yes there is a bit of Leadership, Stakeholder Management , Communications. Even lots on the project organisation, but that is not really about people, its more about what processes their roles are about. There is also a great deal about teams out there, but not much specifically in the projects space. And that is the issue. He advocates creating organisations fit for projects, through integrating and adapting its processes, tools and above all else, through its organisation culture - its people. Evolution of Governance - Geof Leigh Geof explained that Best practice guidance hasn’t changed substantially in the last 30 years. IT promised to revolutionise governance by providing a ‘silver bullet’ but it didn’t happen. Executives disconnected and projects and programmes were left to fend for themselves. Ten years ago he explained the governance those performing governance seemed to be unclear about their role. They were often under self-imposed pressure from their strategies and business plans. Geoff went on to characterise what good governance looks like today. Has Portfolio Management come of age? Geoff Reiss Geoff cited Gartner and Forrester Studies in 2001/3 surveys showed that only one in four programmes delivered a measurable benefit In 2004/7 PWC surveys showed that those organisations who were using portfolio management believed they were getting better results! Activity in this area has ramped up considerably. APM has created the Portfolio and Benefits Management SIGs a wide range of software tools for portfolio managers have emerged. There are still a significant number of ‘pet projects’ that make it through as the brainchild of a powerful individual, PPM generally had matured and spread its influence.

While hiring a manager, good communication skill is a primary component to put into consideration. Helping a manager to make sure that persuasion, responsibility, creativity, and management of value system as well as providing support and motivation to teams. They should have the power to inspire and convince teams to work extra hard to achieve the targeted goals of the organization. Made possible by effective leading. Sound planning, monitoring and communicating. Effective communication acts as an added advantage for a leader to lead effectively (Armstrong & Michael, 2016). The question, what are the key points managers must keep vividly in their minds while communicating with their teams and suggestions to improve communication to make leadership more effective is a topic of discussion in every organization. Thus, forms the basis of our discussion. Effective and accurate communication act as an essential factor to grow an efficient and successful leader or manager. To accomplish professional success, managers must be active and convincing communicators. It is very vital for managers and his team to learn how to communicate effectively and to aid in successfully completing projects and enable the organization to achieve success and grow. As if that is not enough, communication allows every employee to share what they have and give their opinions. Good communication yields better understanding and trust among people, empower them to follow core principles and values that their leaders want to inculcate in them (Armstrong & Michael, 2016). Lack or absence of excellent communication leads to failure to reach goals and the overall decline of the organization. Interacting with the team freely, a manager will increase the potential of having the work done in time. Good leaders are always aware that effective communication is obtained through just a single process. It is through listening and speaking that managers are said to have good communication. Managers should hence set aside objective that they must achieve after communicating. Review and understand the types of project manager power listed and defined in the textbook and select and define any two you feel would be relevant to your current project and explain why. Be specific There are five types of project power manager; formal or legitimate power, reward power, punishment power, expert power, and relational power. One can have all these powers, but to complete the project, I will need to have at least four of them (Heldman & Kim, 2018). Since am doing my final project on leading and managing the Human Resource project, I will consider expert and reward powers. Formal power will help me to establish my own authority as the lead of the project, while expert power will help me gain .
