PER can be defined as the
weight gain of test
group/protein consumed by
the test group.
Advantages- the only equipment needed are rat
cages, food jars, water bottles, and a balance.
Disadvantages -
Because the test can be conducted only with
growing animals, it cannot be used to determine
the protein requirement for maintenance, but
only the combined requirement for growth and
maintenance.
PER cannot distinguish between weight
gained as fat and as lean body mass
CONSIDERATION FOR PER
* Animal Used - Rats
* Rats Weaned for 21 days of age
* Protein Used - Concentration 10% of dry
weight of diet.
* PER of test protein - compared with
ovalbumin.
* Weight gained & food consumed -
Recorded for 3 week feeding trail.
