WHAT IS BBC
three?
BBC Three is the BBC's youth-orientated
television channel, its remit to provide
"innovative programming" to a target
audience of viewers between 16 and 34
years old, leveraging technology as well as
new talent. Unlike its commercial rivals,
90% of BBC Three's output originated from
the United Kingdom. BBC Three has a
particular focus
Northern voices
• Northern Voices objective is to uncover untold stories from people outside of
London. Northern Voices is a scheme for exciting diverse writing talent based in the
North of England. BBC Three and BBC England have announced three new
commissions in collaboration with northern independent production companies as
part of their Northern Voices project with the aim of reflecting the life experiences
of young people in the region.
• BBC Three’s controller Fiona Campbell commented: “These three original
commissions are exactly why it is so important for us to collaborate with BBC
England and the nation’s teams. We were blown away by the ideas presented to us
and we’re proud that BBC Three can be the platform to tell these stories and
showcase new voices.”

My audience of 16–24-
year-olds are the biggest
social media users
therefore making my
documentary about social
media and the effects it
has on the audience's
lives allows me to
actively engage the
audience in something
they are interested in
therefore securing a
target audience before
creating the documentary.
Culture in the digital age
Ideas and inspiration
I would like to create a product that not only engages the target audience age range but a wider scale
and by using social media as the focus of the documentary it will allow for more audiences to engage in
the documentary whilst not aiming for a mainstream audience.
Ideas and inspiration
Almost a quarter of young people are so dependent on
their smartphones that it becomes like an addiction,
suggests research by psychiatrists. The study, from
King's College London, says such addictive behavior
means that people become "panicky" or "upset" if they
are denied constant access.
My documentary aims to highlight the effect technology and social media has on the
target audience age demographic. I will not only interview young people but people who
work alongside them focusing on the impact technology has on their everyday lives. The
documentary aims to find out the positives and negatives of the digital world showcasing
the effect it can have on a person. To engage the target audience the documentary will be
casual along with the interviews in order to highlight honest opinions of the interviewees.
The documentary will aim to have a relaxed tone to the whole project whilst handling a
serious subject matter which makes the documentary more accessible to a wider
audience.

I am extremely happy with the feedback I have received especially the comment about it being
both educational and informative as these are core values of the BBC meaning that this
documentary will be likely to please the client.
