HOWEVER, SOCIAL MEDIA
MAKES IT ALL TOO EASY

WITHOUT TAKING ANY
REAL ACTION.
CLICKTIVISM:
The use of digital media and communication
for facilitating social change and activism
Our presence on social media merely creates
an impression of support
Social media users are
responsible for curating
their own image and self
brand. The Internet is
their opportunity to set
themselves apart.(4)

appears to
superficially work
because it doesn't
for too much from
the individual or
involve financial
and personal risk
CLICKTIVISM
CLICKING,
LIKING,
and so on is the kind of commitment that will
bring only social acknowledgment and praise(6)

Our brain has evolved to reward
us for perceived altruism. When
we think we have helped others,
the body releases dopamine and
endorphins as a reward to
encourage more good behaviour.(9)
MODERN TIMES CONFUSE THE BRAIN AND IT
MISTAKES ACTUALLY FEEDING THE STARVING WITH
RE-TWEETING #FEEDTHESTARVING (9)
A recent study from the
University of British
columbia demonstated
that people who "liked" a
cause on Facebook were
less likely to donate to
that cause (9)
Because, in their minds, they had already contributed.
Their brains had given them a shot of endorphins and it
was time to "help" someone else.(9)

More than just a click

  • 2. Social media has become a powerful, if not essential, tool used for social good, organizing community activism and empowering citizens
  • 3. HOWEVER, SOCIAL MEDIA MAKES IT ALL TOO EASY TO APPEAR ENGAGED IN IMPORTANT ISSUES WITHOUT TAKING ANY REAL ACTION.
  • 4. CLICKTIVISM: The use of digital media and communication for facilitating social change and activism
  • 5. Our presence on social media merely creates an impression of support
  • 6. Social media users are responsible for curating their own image and self brand. The Internet is their opportunity to set themselves apart.(4)
