- Introduction slide: This is a post-lunch light hearted session. Brief overview of what will be looked at in each section. Focus of presentation is the ‘tool’ of social media.
- Everyone is doing it – When the BBC takes it’s news from tweets you know that social media is influential. 2) Life skill – Engaging with rapidly developing technology and communication channels. 3) Profile – People will now Google you and using social media is a powerful way to build your profile. It is also important to be in control of your own internet trail e.g. tweets now showing on google searches 4) Method of science communication - Untargeted communication is easy, targeting and developing a community of interest takes time. Social media has been successful in science communication because it links to target audience. Examples: BBSRC, NERC, CEH, #IYS2015 5) Community – PDRA community, Soil Security Programme community, soils community 6) Impact - Sharing your research with a non-academic audience through social media. Funders requirements, using to have and show impact 7) Fun - I enjoy using social media esp Twitter. I now have a community of interesting, funny people who share, make me laugh and ‘talk’ to me. It’s not a replacement for the physical world but it is fun. Also good when stuck in hotels when away on trips!
- What is social media? Ask google! Lots of ‘platforms’ but I am focussing on Twitter. Why is social media a tool? You can use it but don’t let it use you! – Most criticism of SM comes from how much time it takes. I argue that focussed use, setting time limits, mean that SM is time well used. It’s a; communication tool, community building tool knowledge exchange tool. How to use it Images – vital as Twitter esp is now a visual medium more than a text content medium See photo examples Message – Needs to be focussed and ‘on-message’ See photo examples Community - Connecting with the soils community through following other soils people. Retweeting and liking their posts and joining in conversations through using #

- How not to communicate on social media Etiquette; don’t be greedy, selfish or steal collateral. Don’t be rude! Discussion and debate are useful but being controversial isn’t. You might want to consider not being overtly political as this could impact on future career.
