Facebook News Feed Changes - Employer Checklist

SUMMARY: Facebook will soon be tweaking its algorithm to favor more friend and family stories
over publishers with business pages. If you company has a business page for either corporate
or careers this new change will greatly affect who sees your content.
FACEBOOK SAYS:
“Because space in News Feed is limited, showing more posts from friends and family and
updates that spark conversation means we’ll show less public content, including videos and
other posts from publishers or businesses. As we make these updates, Pages may see their
reach, video watch time and referral traffic decrease. The impact will vary from Page to Page,
driven by factors including the type of content they produce and how people interact with it.”
RECOMMENDATIONS TO COUNTERACT LOSS OF REACH
REDUCE AUTOMATION
● Facebook’s algorithm prefers content directly uploaded onto its platform over content that gets
published via social media tools.
● If they notice that you’re sharing the same information everywhere all at once, it’s very likely that
you’ll get thrown into virtual FB jail (Facebook Jail).
● To avoid getting a “Facebook Time Out” or sent to ​Facebook Jail​, we basically have to control the
speed at which we like and comment on things
● 80% of your updates should be social. Pictures and videos of your employees…(Source:

INVOLVE YOUR TEAM
● Get more of your employees involved in sharing, liking and commenting on your posts
● This will help boost your engagement of each post and should result in higher visibility.
● Cross promote your page on other social media channels...tools like QueSocial, FirmPlay can

ADVERTISE
● Boosting your posts that already have a high engagement score are a great way to keep that
piece of content relevant in their algorithm.
● Consider devoting more of your job ad budget to get more Facebook reach.
● Upload your own database as custom audience.
PRIORITIZE CONTENT
● Instruct your your page followers how to prioritize your content.
1. Go to Edit Preferences on News Feed tab
2. Choose “Prioritize who to see first”
3. Choose your page(s)
INCREASE USE of GROUPS
● Sharing some of your job or other career content in local groups you can get free traffic.
● People tag their friends on a group job listing to alert them of a new opportunity.
● Search for phrases like ‘​chicago job​ or chicago employment’ from the group tab.
EMBRACE VIDEO
● Facebook wants more video content so give it to them
● Live streaming along with the native video upload on Facebook will greatly help your reach
● Video is the best performing type of content
