8. Article Summary: Introduction
This article is called “Demographic shifts and the
HR challenges of the future”. It begins by
discussing that demographics are rapidly
changing and they have had huge impacts on HR
departments everywhere. With the changes in
demographics some practices used in todays HR
world may become obsolete. This article
focuses on the aging population, generation Y,
globalization in the work place, and the rise of
female workers.
9. Article Summary: Aging Populations
• With mortality rates going up, that means
people will be working longer, HR must adapt
to make sure they are ready to deal with these
changes:
– Changes in pensions
– Changes in benefits
– Intergenerational conflicts
10. Article Summary: Generation Y
• While making accommodations for the older
generations HR must be sure to also make
sure they are adapted to be ready do deal
with the younger generations needs as well,
such as:
– New innovative environments
– Focus on immediate future
11. Article Summary: Globalization in the
Workforce
• Globalization in the work force means that
workers are moving around more, exposing
them to more cultures of the world. This
creates several challenges for HR:
– More cultural diversity in the workplace, forcing
HR workers to become more culturally aware.
– Recruiting, with a specific focus on global
education
12. Article Summary: Working Women
• With more and more women continuing to join
the work force in developed, and developing
countries, there are several challenges HR will
face because of this:
– Make sure the companies policies also cater to
women
– Make sure men and women are able to work together
in the work place.
– Be flexible with women who have children and are the
sole providers for their families, and make sure to
know how this will impact business.
13. Article Summary: Conclusion
• Shifts in the global workforce are going to
cause the world of human resources to make
a lot of changes to how they currently do
things. These are only a few examples of
accommodations that they will have to make,
there are many more changes that are to
come, and some that may have not been even
considered yet.
14. Article Analysis
This article discusses the upcoming changes in
the world of human resources and how to deal
with them. The fact that this was discussed on a
global level instead of just on the basis of one
country is something that is incredibly important
because there are these global components that
often get forgotten about.
15. Article Analysis
The work force is going to keep changing and to
keep up with it, HR departments must be fast on
their feet to adapt to these changes. The only
critique that I have for this article was that I
believe it could be more detailed overall, it was
kind of brief. It would have made more sense if
it were in the context of a specific company.
16. Demographic Changes in the United
States
• According to pewreaserch.org the US is more
racially and ethnically diverse than ever:
– Millennial’s outnumber baby boomers and are the
most racially diverse generation with 43% of
millennial adults being non-white
– If the projections are correct then by 2055 there
will be no racial majority, due to immigration.
17. Demographic Changes in the United
States
• According to pewresearch.org, another large
change in demographic in the US, is women in
the work force:
– In 2011, 40% of mothers were the sole
breadwinners for their families.
– While there are more women in leadership
positions they are being held to a higher standard,
which many find discouraging. That’s why there
still aren’t as many women in political or
leadership positions.
18. Conclusion
With the demographics constantly changing the
united states the Human Resources industry is
consistently changing, but must still continue to
stay fast on its feet to continue to compete with
other companies. HR must continue to ensure
the growth and safety of a diverse workplace
while still ensuring the productivity of a
company.
