2. •Early Life
Where it began
•
•
Raised in Des Moines, Iowa
Went to MIT
•
Graduated from Yale in 2003 with a Political Science
degree
3. •Early Career
•
Before creating Pinterest, Silbermann worked at Google in the
Sales Organization Department and left only after a short
time
•
After Silbermann went on to try and create his own app. Tote,
It ended up failing because it not gain a significant amount of
attraction, which then lead to the creation of Pinterest
4. •The History of Pinterest
WHERE IS IT TODAY?
•
•
•
•
In Pinterest’s early stages it did not gain many
followers for a while.
The first thought of the idea of Pinterest was in
December of 2009, only about 5 years ago
Was launched in March of 2010, so only about 3
years old
Today it has about 140 + employees and almost 2
million users
5. •What is Pinterest?
•
is a pinboard-style photo-sharing
website that allows users to create
and manage theme-based images

to their own pinboards, or "like"
photos. - Wikipedia

7. Copyright Issues continued
Pinterest acts as a
photo sharing site/
forum
This issue of copyright
came up a lot when the
site was first launched
by the DMCA (Digital
Millenium Copyright
act)
•
•
March of 2012
Pinterest released a
statement saying they
thought they were
being protected by
the DMCA safe
harbor provision
when they actually
were not.
8. •Copyright Issues cont.
•
•
•
Pinterest users could not actually claim safe harbor
status because they are exposed to possible legal
action for pinning copyrighted material
Since then pinterest has done what they could to avoid
this problem. Pinterest added a notification center,
which allows copyright holders to request that their
content be taken down and removed from the site
They also created a “no pin” HTML metatag that was
released February of 2012 stating that it allows website
to opt. out of their images being used on Pintertest.
9. •Copyright Issues Cont.
•
•
•
Star
Burst!
In early May of 2012 the site added automatic
attribution of authors on images from Flicker, Youtube,
Vimeo etc.
Most companies in the end do enjoy the publicity.
After all of that, there still is a chance that illegal
copyright activity could go on without putting the
credited sources name on your “pins”.
