COURSE OUTLINE
WRITING IN THE DISCIPLINE (ENGLISH 2)
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This three-unit course deals with the communication skills development program that
begins with English 1. It includes development of the more complete study skills in communication
such as outlining, summarizing, critical reading, escalation of the student’s knowledge in terms of
sentence construction, paragraph development and composition writing as well as introduction to
research paper preparation as applied in the different fields or disciplines.
COURSE GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the semester, the students are expected to:
A.Cognitive (Knowledge):
1. Point out grammatical relationship between words, group of words, and sentences within the writing
level.
2. Compose clear and effective sentences, paragraphs and compositions.
3. Demonstrate ability to write using the different methods of paragraph development and forms of
discourse.
4. Identify the basic concepts and procedure of research process.
5. Formally defend a research proposal.
B.Affective (Attitude) :
1. Display confidence in communicating facts and thoughts, whether to inform, narrate, persuade,
explain or defend.
2. Manifest active interest in the discussion of concepts and principles of writing.
3. Express interest in enriching experience and expanding knowledge through the various styles and
methods of writing.
4. Be aware of the value of research including its overall considerations and guidelines.
5. Practice hard work, persistence, resourcefulness and honesty in the conduct of research and other
writing tasks.
C.Psychomotor (Skills)
1. Enthusiastically participate in group discussions to elicit ideas in writing different paragraphs and in
selecting a research problem.
2. Professionally write effective sentences, paragraphs and compositions using the concepts, principles
and techniques learned in the class.
3. Conduct research effectively and responsively.
4. Independently demonstrate the ability to unite logical statements and judgments in the research
process.

Grading System:
Midterm: Final Grade:
Attendance: 10% Attendance: 10%
Recitation: 20% Recitation: 20%

Research Output: 15% Research Output: 25%
Topic Presentation: 15% Topic Presentation: 15%
Attitude: 10% Attitude: 10%
Midterm Exam: 15% Final Exam: 15%

Midterm Grade + Final Grade ÷ 2 = GPA
Consistent with the thrust of promoting academic integrity and honesty as embodied in the
provisions of the MPDCI Student Handbook and pertinent laws, any form of cheating shall warrant an
automatic grade of five (5.0) or Failure, besides the imposition of any proper disciplinary action.
Only an absence of nine (9) cumulative hours or six (6) contact sessions are allowed for each
student. Each absence shall translate to a corresponding .25 deduction from attendance points, to wit:
ces = 2.5
Cumulative tardiness of ninety (90) minutes shall mean one (1) absence, unless prior consent
from the instructor has been sought by the student.
