3. Secondary objectives
Reduce energy waste
Increase productivity/ decrease down time
Save labor and material
Reduced maintenance labor
Eliminate excessive defrost cycles
Improve product quality
Reduce product loss
4. Resulting Issues
Infiltration into causes:
Excess energy consumption
Additional maintenance cost
Problems achieving required temperature
Additional equipment purchases
Adverse product quality effect
Product contamination from frost
5. Increased Energy Use
Infiltration causes up to 50% of total heat
load on typical refrigeration system
Increased
Refrigeration
Load
Decreased
Ability to
Maintain temp
Drastically increased
electricity expense*
The increases can be accurately calculated
6. Maintenance and Labor Cost
Defrost Cycles are expensive
Energy
Labor
Frost Buildup
More frequent defrost cycles needed
Reduces overall freezer system capacity
Decreased air flow through the coils
Insulating effect
Parasitic heat load
Associated costs
Hard to calculate
Vary depending on many factors
Specific facility,
Type and age of equipment
Defrost method used.
7. Food Safety & Quality
Failure to maintain temp can cause
Product safety concerns
Product quality issues
Reputational concerns
Loss of product
9. The Cold Chain Solution
Infiltration Reduction Vestibule
(IRV)
Modular three chamber vestibule
Uses venturi effect to create air barrier
Vacuum offsets the pressure differential
between two environments
Multiple airlocks impede airflow between
chambers
System dynamically adjusts vacuum pressure
using feedback based control loop
Eliminates warm air infiltration while
minimizing exfiltration of refrigerated air
11. IRV’s Features
Modular design for easy install and removal
for cleaning/ maintenance
Stainless steel construction for food grade
applications
High R-factor insulation between chambers
and environment
Long-life/ high efficiency brushless motor
reduces operating cost
19. Thermal Imaging Examples
These pallet conveyors inside a Thermal imaging shows that the low R10o F cold storage freezer are fitted value and poor perimeter seal of these high
with high speed roll up doors.
speed roll-up doors allows large amounts
of 72o F/ 80% humidity infiltrating air.

Infiltration causes up to 50% of total heat load on typical refrigeration systemIncreased Refrigeration Load - additional refrigeration load= decreased ability to maintain temperature and increases the electricity expense required to run the refrigeration equipment. The increased use of electricity can be accurately calculated
We implemented a two stage approach to improve the performance of the spiral freezer. We installed Cold Chain’s Infiltration Reduction Vestibule (IRV) at the conveyor opening. The IRV creates a “reverse venturivaccum suction” to counter the natural venture effect and lower pressure inside of the spiral freezer.
