Background: The A2ZERO Plan
Partners in Community Forestry Conference | November 17th, 2022
• Adopted June 1st, 2020
• Ann Arbor’s plan to achieve a just transition to community-wide
carbon neutrality by 2030
Power our electrical grid with
100% renewable energy
Switch our appliances and
vehicles from gasoline,
diesel, propane, coal, and
natural gas to electric
Significantly improve the
energy efficiency in our
homes, businesses,
schools, places of worship,
recreational sites, and
government facilities
Reduce the miles we travel in our
vehicles by at least 50%
Change the way we use, reuse,
and dispose of materials
Enhance the resilience of our
people and our place

Community Resilience
Partners in Community Forestry Conference | November 17th, 2022
• The ability of a community to
prepare for, adapt to,
withstand, and/or recover from
hazards, changing conditions,
and other disruptions
• Ann Arbor faces:
• rising temperatures
• increased precipitation
6. Ann Arbor Office of Sustainability and Innovations
Trees and Resilience
Roots reduce erosion,
flooding, and runoff
Leaves and roots absorb
pollutants
Trunks sequester carbon
Canopy shades buildings,
reducing cooling costs and
energy use
Canopy serves as a
windbreak, reducing heating
costs and energy use
Trees beautify, improve
mental health, and add
habitat for wildlife

Equity and Climate Justice
Partners in Community Forestry Conference | November 17th, 2022
• Climate change effects can have different social, economic,
and health impacts on different communities
• Decision-making and implementation of A2ZERO programs
includes marginalized, under-represented, and frontline
communities

Trees and Equity
Partners in Community Forestry Conference | November 17th, 2022
• The benefits of trees are often
missing in areas where they
are needed most
• Tree planting efforts must be
made with equity and
environmental justice in mind
– and with input from
impacted communities

Notas del editor
Growing up, I was always fascinated with the natural world and loved going to National Parks - like the Great Smokey Mountains - and other natural areas
I decided to study biology for undergrad, with a focus on birds and small mammals…
But then my first job out of college was in the El Yunque Rainforest of Puerto Rico, measuring and mapping trees for a long-term research study
I fell in love with trees, and my next job was at Casey Trees, a non-profit in Washington D.C., where I worked on a survival study and led volunteer tree inventories
I then went to Auburn University, where I pursued an MS in Forestry while researching Turkey Oak seedlings in the longleaf pine habitats of SW Georgia
After graduating, I began searching for jobs related to tree education, outreach, and advocacy – and was hired by OSI to launch the 10K Trees Initiative!
A seventh overarching strategy includes actions such as carbon pricing, emissions offsets, and a community sustainability grant program
Temperatures are expected to rise by 3-7°F by 2050
Ann Arbor is projected to have 12-36 more days per year above 90°F by 2050
Average annual precipitation has increased by 44% since the 1950s and continues to rise
The total amount of rain falling during extreme events has increased by 37% since 1981
The importance of equity and climate justice can be seen using mapping tools such as the Neighborhoods at Risk tool from Headwaters Economics
From this screenshot, we can see that socio-economic factors and environmental factors such as flood risk and tree canopy cover can be combined to produce maps of the census tracts most at risk of experiencing a disproportionately heavy burden from climate change effects
Strategy 6 of the A2ZERO Plan – Action 3: Preserve and Enhance the Local Tree Canopy
Achieving community resilience is dependent on both public and private property
Trees on private property have a more direct impact on resilience and equity, due to proximity to homes and the direct involvement of the property owner
