Squire Sanders’ Global Health Care and Life Sciences
Practice Expanded by Addition of Three Industry Leaders
Columbus, OH (26 March 2010) – Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P., acting on a deep
understanding of the wide impact of global health care and life sciences industries, has
added leading health care lawyers Peter A. Pavarini, Lisa G. Han and Anthony D. Shaffer.

Pavarini is widely known for his significant experience in complex health care transactions,
regulatory compliance, health care payment and health information technology. He
represents large hospital systems, stand-alone hospitals, large medical group practices,
health insurance companies, managed care organizations, health information technology
companies, nursing and medical schools, specialty providers and most other large forms of
health care providers. His work encompasses corporate reorganization, mergers and
acquisitions (M&A), joint ventures, hospital/physician alignment strategies, private
placements, regulatory compliance with federal and state health care laws, a wide variety of
contracting projects, as well as extensive spin-off litigation, real estate, and labor and
employment work.
He is serving his second term on the board of directors of the American Health Lawyers
Association (AHLA), the premier national association of US-based health care lawyers. He is
on key committees including the nominating, membership and practice group board
committees. Pavarini is also well-known in US health care industry circles for developing an
innovative physician enterprise model adopted by several major US-based hospitals.
Pavarini began his legal career as a lawyer in the Office of Inspector General with the US
Department of Health and Human Services in Washington DC. He has earned Martindale-
Hubbell’s highest rating, has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America every year since
1991 and has been named an Ohio Super Lawyer each year since the award’s inception in
2004. He was recently named one of the best lawyers in the health care field by
Euromoney’s Guide to the Leading US Healthcare Lawyers. He has lectured extensively
before professional and industry groups throughout the United States and has published in a
variety of legal and trade journals.
Pavarini graduated in 1973 from University at Albany, State University of New York, summa
cum laude, and earned his J.D. in 1977 from Boston College Law School. He is a member of
the American Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, Columbus Bar Association,
Society of Ohio Healthcare Attorneys and Columbus Bar Foundation.
Han – who has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America from 2003 to 2010; the 2009
edition of Super Lawyers, Corporate Counsel Edition; and Ohio Super Lawyers from 2004 to
2010 including being named one of the “Top 25 Women in Columbus” in 2010 – represents

hospitals, large physician groups, mental health providers, health care management firms
with a national presence and similar health care organizations.
Her work encompasses corporate reorganization, M&A, joint ventures, managed care, payor
contracting and revenue cycle considerations for large health care providers, physician
alignment strategies, private placements/syndication strategies, a wide variety of
contracting projects and regulatory compliance with federal and state health care laws.
Han speaks and writes Mandarin fluently and has advised clients on strategies for entering
the China market. She received an LL.B. in 1985 from National Chengchi University in Taipei,
Taiwan; an LL.M. in 1988 from the University of Pennsylvania; and her J.D. in 1992 from
The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
Han is a member of the American Bar Association, American Health Lawyers Association,
Columbus Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, Society of Ohio Healthcare Attorneys,
International Bar Association, National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, Asian
American Chamber of Commerce and Chinese American Association of Central Ohio.
Shaffer assists health care organizations and industry service providers in developing legal
and strategic solutions during all phases of their business life cycle. From the initial start-up
to the ultimate disposition of an organization, Shaffer provides advice regarding how to
comply with the myriad laws regulating the health care industry. He offers a wealth of
experience in health care transactional and regulatory matters including for profit and
nonprofit organization and governance, business financing, acquisitions, sales, mergers,
syndications, physician-hospital joint ventures, leasing, health care fraud, anti-kickback
statute compliance, Stark law issues, health care informatics, health information privacy
and security, charitable trust and tax-exemption, reimbursement and licensure.
Shaffer was appointed by Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland in 2008 to serve as a member of the
Ohio Health Information Partnership Advisory Board. He is also a co-chair of the governance
subcommittee and a member of the Legal Work Group for Ohio’s Health Information
Security and Privacy Collaboration project administered by the Health Policy Institute of
Ohio.
He graduated cum laude with a B.A. from Ohio University and summa cum laude with a
J.D. from Capital University. He serves on the board of directors of both the Haven of Hope
Cancer Foundation and Catholic Schools of Zanesville, Ohio. He is also a member of the
American, Ohio State and Columbus Bar Associations, and the American Health Lawyers
Association.
Pavarini, Han and Shaffer join Squire Sanders from Schottenstein Zox & Dunn Co., LPA.
Pavarini led that firm’s health law practice group, and Han coordinated that firm’s
international practice area.
