  2. 2. Overview  Hang Out! Is a six-level course book series designed specifically for elementary learners of English.  The series follows a comprehensive language program developed around a CEFR-based curriculum, showcasing levels PreA1 – B1.  Student’s are guided by the Scaffolding ELT methodology, allowing them to progress from producing simple phrases to complex sentences in a wide-range of topics, situations, and environments.  Through vivid illustrations, realist readings, and engaging comics, students follow a family of characters in their daily lives, eventually building their knowledge of high-frequency vocabulary, common grammar structures, and useful expressions.
  3. 3. Key Features  Engaging activities covering all four equal strands of learning (Meaning- focused input, Meaning-focused output, Language-focused learning, and Fluency development).  Teacher’s Edition with extensive classroom notes and Classroom Digital Materials.  Free downloadable content to expand the lesson and provide additional practice.  Workbook and interactive teaching CD.  Student Digital Materials and Student’s App (Class Booster) for extra practice in class or at home.
  4. 4. The Four Strand Theory The Four Strand theory suggests to provide a roughly equal balance of meaning- focused input, meaning focused output, language-focused learning, and fluency development. Teachers should keep a record of the activities done in the course, the strand they fit into, and the amount of time spent on them.
  5. 5. 1 - Meaning-focused input Main Goal  Focus should be on trying to understand, gain knowledge and enjoy what you are listening and reading about.  Learning through listening/ reading – using language receptively. Conditions  Most of what learners are listening to or reading is familiar .  The learners are interested in the input and want to understand it.  Learners learn from context clues and background knowledge.  Large quantities of input are present . Activities  Extensive reading, shared reading, listening to stories, watching TV or films, being a listener to a conversation.
  6. 6. 2 – Meaning-focus output Main Goal  Get your message across to someone else with language knowledge that is largely familiar to you. This idea is very popular in language teaching and is called communicative language teaching.  Learning through speaking and writing – productive skills. Conditions  Learners write/talk about things that are largely familiar to them .  Main goal is to convey their message to someone else.  Learn from communication strategies, dictionaries/ previous input.  Plenty of opportunities to speak and write are available. Activities  Talking in conversations, speech or lecture, writing a letter or note, diary, telling a story and telling someone how to do something.
  7. 7. 3 – Language-focused learning Main Goal  To learn language features: grammar, vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation and discourse.  Use language-learning strategies. Conditions  Learners give deliberate attention to language features.  Features should be simple and not dependent on developmental knowledge that learners do not have.  Features that are studied in this strand should occur often in the other three strands of the course. Activities  Intensive reading/listening, pronunciation practice, using substitution tables and drills, learning vocabulary form word cards, translation, memorizing.
  8. 8. 4 – Fluency Development Main Goal  Improve fluency of language items and features in your target language in all four skills: listening, writing, reading and speaking.  Developing speed and reinforcing learning. Conditions  All of what the learners are listening to, reading, speaking, or writing is largely familiar to them.  Pressure or encouragement to perform at a faster than usual speed.  There is a large amount of input and output.  Learners’ focus is on receiving or conveying meaning. Activities  Speed reading, repeated retelling, ten-minute writing and listening to stories.
  9. 9. Scaffolding Main Goal  The support or assistance given during the learning process, provides comprehensible input and moves the learner into the proximal development zone. Conditions  When a learner sees an image or word which is being explained, the learning aid assists in making the input more comprehensible, which is necessary for sufficient language acquisition.  Young learners need scaffolding, both orally and visually, to reduce the fear of learning and boredom in their language classroom.
  10. 10. CEFR Alignment Competency Development  CEFR alignment  Vocabulary (English Profile project by the British Council categorizes a large pool of vocabulary according to topic and CEFR level)  Can describe him/herself, what he/she does and where he/she lives.  Can-do statements I can communicate very basic information about myself and my family in a simple way.
  11. 11. Student Book
  12. 12. Student Book 9 units in each book including:  2 grammatical structures  16 new words (two sets of 8)  Reading, writing, listening, speaking activities  Phonics in books 1 & 2  CLIL and intercultural content  Content to mirror YLE tests
  13. 13. Student Book Colorful images introduce first eight vocabulary items. Simple monolog by one of the characters introduces the vocabulary and structure of the unit in a situational context. Follow-up activity has students listen to the eight vocabulary items again and find them in the main picture.
  14. 14. Student Book A fun song provides an exciting opportunity for students to learn the target structure and vocabulary of the unit. Speaking activity reinforces the learning objectives.
  15. 15. Student Book Review song allows students to produce the learned vocabulary and structure and is followed up with a comprehension activity. Short reading presents the structure in a new context. Comprehension activity strengthens and confirms the students understanding of the new vocabulary and structure.
  16. 16. Student Book Preparation activity helps students get ready for the speaking tasks with puzzles, stickers, drawing, coloring, and more. Speaking task requires students to share information about part A, and allows teachers to monitor students comprehension and use of target structure and vocabulary.
  17. 17. Student Book Comic-book style story lets students follow the main characters in amusing situations. Comprehension activity checks student’s understanding of the story and focuses on the key vocabulary and structure. Natural language and situations introduce the unit’s secondary vocabulary set and structure.
  18. 18. Student Book More colorful images introduce the second set of eight vocabulary items to students. Picture-based substitution drill provides practice using the vocabulary and structure. Follow-up vocabulary activity helps students recognize the key words. Exciting chant reinforces the vocabulary and structure.
  19. 19. Student Book Reading passages connects the unit theme, vocabulary, and structures with an interesting topic. Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and intercultural learning content are featured with a magazine-style presentation. Big, colorful images aid comprehension and provide opportunities for expansion activities.
  20. 20. Student Book Comprehension activity checks student’s understanding and reinforces new vocabulary.
  21. 21. Student Book Combined-skills activity incorporates listening and reading; students listen and determine whether statements are correct or incorrect. Summary activity checks the students comprehension of the reading passage and provides the basis for an overall summary of the content.
  22. 22. Student Book Phonics activity, in levels 1 & 2, builds the student’s spelling skills and ability to sound out words. The writing graphic organizer provides a framework for a short writing project. Students can plan their project with teacher assistance and complete it on the portfolio worksheet in the Workbook.
