• Why is writing important?
• How do we teach our students to write?
• What are the steps to becoming a “successful” writer?
• What do good writers do?
• What can our students write about?
• And… we will take a look at Write On
3. A Neglected Skill
Have you had any of these thoughts?
• My classes are too small.
• I don’t have enough time to teach writing.
• What can my students write about?
• I’m not a good writer. How can I ever teach writing?
4. Why Is Writing Important?
Writing is:
• A form of output.
• A means of building fluency.
• A way of developing accuracy, especially in grammar and
vocabulary usage.
• A critical skill for academic of professional success.
• A source of input when students read their own work.
We learn to read by reading and we learn to write by writing
BUT
We also learn to read by writing and we learn to write by
reading.
5. Writing is:
• A way to show proficiency.
• A path to discover what we know and we do not know.
• A process.
• More than a paragraph or an essay.
• Collaborative.
• Thinking made evident.
6. So, What Do Good Writers Do?
• TSL (Think in a second language.)
• Generate ideas without editing them at the same time.
• Freewrite (“Free” themselves from editing.)
• Understand that writing is way of learning, as opposed to
a stand-alone skill.
• Have an understanding of what they are going to write
about it before beginning to write.
• Use a model writing passage as a guide, if necessary.
7. What do we need?
• We must have a plan.
• We need to have background knowledge.
• A language focus is important for EFL students.
• We need to be comfortable with our topic.
9. What is a model?
• A model passage provides students with an idea of what
is expected of them.
• A model passage helps provide background knowledge.
• A model passage is a reading passage and remember…
students learn to write by reading!
• A model passages gives students CONFIDENCE!
11. What do we do with the model passage?
• Ensure that we understand it.
• Retelling the passage give students valuable reading
comprehension practice and speaking practice.
• Helps students understand how to “take apart” and
“analyze” a passage.
• Mapping the passage helps students understand the
details that they need to include in their own writing.
13. Why is the language focus important?
• Ensures that students understand what is expected of
them.
• Gives students a focus for their writing.
• Gives students confidence that they are writing correctly.
• Give students additional practice to reinforce what they
already know.
19. Follow Up Activities
• Have students keep writing portfolios.
• Have regular presentation sessions.
• Have students reflect on their writing. (What’s improved?
What’s difficult? What’s easy? What’s getting harder? What’s
getting easier? Am I making my point?)
• Let students choose their own topics using the same language
focus and model. (Ex. Dirty Jobs Luxurious Jobs!)
