 Significant Signalling Strategies
Masterclass leader: Julian strong, Lead Engineer, Betchel
Julian has over 20 years experience in design, construction management and test and commissioning of railway signalling systems
from Metro Lines to Very High Speed Rail. During this period Julian has worked for Bechtel and has been contracted to work on
projects for Network Rail, Tubelines and also Union Rail as it was known.
Julian was heavily involved in CTRL (HS1) from its conception with responsibility for the production of preliminary tender, signalling
plans and design in the projects initial stages in addition to monitoring and approving the contractor’s final designs to ensure
compliance with the clients specific requirements. Julian’s vast expertise places him in the perfect position to lead this HSR Signalling
 Systems specific masterclass.

 Learning Outcomes
Ensure you implement the most project specific signalling strategy to ensure increased interoperability between all interfaces
Ascertain client signalling requirements through early communication to tailor-make a system specific to the HSR route designed
Increase the international routes available for future HSR line development by implementing the latest ERTMS technology

 Masterclass B: 12.00 - 14.30
The Secret to Perfect Power Distribution and Electrification Delivery
Masterclass leader: Iain Nunn , Director of Rail Infrastructure, Jacobs
Iain has led successful delivery and gained commendation of Network Rail GRIP2, 3 and 4 development of major infrastructure
investment projects, fitout of HS1 traincare facilities for South eastern Railways at Ashford and Ramsgate and developed delivery
strategies and Tender preparation for under and over ground rail infrastructure including High Speed Rail and London 2012 projects.
During his work on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link he led the project delivery and development strategy and initiated business growth
and security including the potential acquisition of the Eurotunnel electrical distribution assets in UK and France. Iain inaugurated,
developed and led the successful project management delivery strategy for EDF Energy for the design, procurement, delivery,
commissioning and operation of all multidisciplinary engineering elements and managed the respective value engineering exercise in
1999 that reduced a budget of £120m by £30m actual. The efforts of the team were rewarded in 2004 with the British
Construction Industry Award, Major Projects, for Power Engineering - Channel Tunnel Rail Link Section 1

 Learning Outcomes
