- Many of you are using Twitter. I’m going to talk about how we’re using it, what some associations are doing, different ways to tweet. Hopefully I can convince those who aren’t using it to get on board.Icon image/avatar, 20 characters for name, 15 characters for username (not including ampersand), short bio 160 chars, location, link to website, background image, all can be changed easily
- Why? New audiences, quick way to disseminate info, follow what’s going on.Content is limited to 140 characters (including spaces and punctuation) so be brief! Tweets are valued for their timeliness, conciseness and relevant information.
- Here is a basic tweet where parties who may be interested are called out so it will show up in their Twitter feed, too.
- Box in upper right corner is where you start. On mobile device, similar icon in upper right corner. More control, can add hashtags. More on hashtags in a bit.Versatile is uses, but in general: be genuine, non-deceptive, timely, and valuable.
- How to call out or mention? With ampersand in front on username. Why call out others? It comes up on their feeds, wherever they put them, and they may retweet, they may reciprocate.
- Retweeting is your friend, especially in the beginning. Both of these CCE tweets re-tweeted by two different entities. CCE Tioga in top one.
- Public, you can see their tweets, re-tweets, tweets of those who mentioned them. Erie – summary, at bottom hit Go to full profile and you’ll see something like Oneida – will include tweets and retweets and mentions.
- Easy to share stories in external media. If you use share buttons on external site, tweet can look messy, clean up before tweeting.
- This is a tweet plus a photo to illustrate how pictures show up.
- Kglobal is PR firm hired by APLU to promote extension nationally. Ag Is America is the campaign. And they are big on Twitter.
- If you’re already using FB, you can connect a Twitter account. This has to be set up – get in touch if you need help.
- Share buttons under Cornell and other blogs make it easy to share original content, esp if you need to get something out quickly in the fast news cycle. Tweet at reporter, elected officials, their staffers. Can be way quicker to do press releases and other news with a short fuse.
- A word about hashtags. I don’t use them much, but many do.
- Nice icon on a plain background, CCE spelled out. Another example of a background picture and the three line lock up for the icon, bio includes web address
- Here are all the associations I know of who are using Twitter. (~20) Don’t see your name here? Let me know. I keep this list right near my computer and call out association whenever possible. There are also many individual educators and programs with Twitter accounts.
- Some suggested entities to follow. Retweet, see what they’re up to, etc. If you’re setting up a newaccount, Twitter will ask you to follow three to move through the account set up process. cce_disaster is NY-EDEN
- Embedding feed on front page is great way to an up-to-date feeling on your website. Must pay attention and tweet regularly though. Some of you doing it already.Get in touch if you want to do this but don’t know how.
- Get someone to pay attention. We’ve had no problems, but inappropriate tweeters can be blocked and reported. Simple to Unfollow anyone at any time.Tweet fun stuff too. Example: Times article about lots of winter happenings around NYS: ice wine, curling, Dickens in Skaneateles, etc.Twitter help is pretty good and eXtension has some good basic Twitter lessons, too.
- Originated in design community in Japan to cut down on wordiness, spread all over world, PKN. Author Daniel Pink has short piece in 2007 Wired. Has a real PechaKucha presentation – all images.
- Have your staff get in touch if they need help.
