12. Two Modes of Action
HPPD Inhibitor: Commonly known as a bleacher
Inhibits the 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)
enzyme in plants
HPPD is key to the production of protective pigments in
plants and the development of chloroplasts in plants
By inhibiting pigment and chloroplast biosynthesis, emerging
plant tissue is bleached (white to pale yellow)
ALS Inhibitor: Inhibition of the acetolactate synthase
enzyme
Prevents the production of three essential branch-chain
amino acids
These amino acids are building blocks for a plant’s normal
growth and development

Notas del editor
At just 5.6 fl oz/A Corvus consistently delivers one pass control of your toughest grass and broadleaf weeds for a full season. Corvus also delivers something no other product can: Burndown, residual and reactivation to deliver uncompromised weed control whether conditions turn wet or even hot and dry. In fact, just a half-inch of rain can reactivate its weed-control properties. This photo highlights the reactivation of Corvus on late-emerging weeds.
You can apply Corvus at a number of stages, including as a burndown treatment, early pre-plant and even at early postemergence through the V2 growth stage. This flexibility in application helps you develop a weed-control approach with maximum convenience and efficacy.
Corvus contains two modes of action to control many weeds resistant to other herbicides - even glyphosate, ALS-, PPO- and triazine-resistant weeds, giving growers an option to break the weed-resistance cycle. Corvus also controls tough grasses that others can ’t.
Corvus herbicide can be applied in ounces per acre vs. pints or quarts per acre as required by other herbicides. Corvus works in one-pass at 5.6 fl oz/A, fits any tillage program, provides excellent burndown and has long-lasting residual. It works by translocating through the roots and shoots of weeds.
Corvus provides excellent season-long control with crop safety on varying soil types. You get season-long benefits whether applied pre-emergence or early postemergence through V2.
Corvus also contains CSI Safener technology, which has both soil and foliar uptake, making the safener active in both pre and early post applications. And it allows Corvus to be used on any soil through the V2 growth stage.
CSI is a proprietary safener from Bayer CropScience that changes the capacity of the plant to withstand herbicidal activity and has been shown to lead to increased root growth and plant health.
The combination of Corvus and atrazine provides control of broadleaf weeds such as Giant Ragweed or Morningglory that may be missed or only partially controlled by Lumax or Lexar.
Corvus, in combination with atrazine, provides superior control of grass weeds including: Woolly cupgrass, Shattercane and Foxtail versus Lumax and Lexar which may only provide partial control.
Corvus herbicide provides consistent one-pass weed control. Under heavy weed pressure in a university test plot, a pre-emergence application of Corvus controlled weeds through canopy.
The first mode of action found in Corvus is commonly known as a bleacher. It inhibits the HPPD enzyme in plants, which is key to the production of protective pigments and the development of chloroplasts in plant tissues. By inhibiting pigment and chloroplast biosynthesis, emerging plant tissue is bleached to white or pale yellow and ultimately dies. The second mode of action prevents the production of three essential branch-chain amino acids that would otherwise serve as building blocks for a plant ’s growth and development.
Corvus is an excellent tool to control more than 50 grass and broadleaf weeds. It can help manage glyphosate-, PPO- and triazine-resistant weed populations while maintaining the viability of other herbicide programs.
Corvus can be used in almost any tillage system and any time from burndown to early postemergence through V2 growth stage.
Corvus can be used on field corn or corn grown for silage and can be applied at various application rates, depending on the soil type and application timing. When applied at the full rate of 5.6 fl oz/A, Corvus provides consistent, one-pass, weed control all season long.
Corvus can be applied to coarse soils at the 3.3 fluid ounces per acre rate and to medium and fine soils, including sandy soils, at the 5.6 fluid ounces per acre rate. If you ’d like more information about rates based on specific use and soil type, consult the Corvus label. Or check with your local retailer.
Corvus, plus a comparatively low load of atrazine, provide a powerful combination for weed control, but in application of ounces versus pints or quarts.
Corvus provides outstanding crop safety and weed control even in sandy soils. Here, Corvus was applied pre-emergence at 5.6 ounces along with one quart of atrazine on light sandy soil.
Corvus provides great flexibility and can be used as a conventional herbicide program as well as in a program with other herbicides and appropriate hybrids, such as LibertyLink or Roundup Ready.
Not only can Corvus stand alone as a one-pass herbicide, but it ’s also a strong tankmix partner for atrazine and a number of other herbicides. The addition of atrazine to Corvus herbicide can improve the spectrum and consistency of weeds controlled.
If applying Corvus pre-plant or pre-emergence and existing weeds are six inches or shorter, Corvus should be applied with Crop Oil Concentrate or Methylated Seed Oil. For weeds not controlled by Corvus or when weeds are taller than six inches, the addition of a burndown herbicide such as paraquat should be considered.
Burndown results are visible in the treated areas 20 days after treatment when Corvus was applied at 5.5 ounces with 2 pints of atrazine plus Crop Oil Concentrate plus nitrogen.
While Crop Oil Concentrate or Methylated Seed Oil should be used as part of a burndown program, do not use COC or MSO if corn has emerged. In addition, tankmixing Corvus with other herbicides is not recommended for early postemergence applications as this could lead to crop response symptoms.
Note the level of crop rotation flexibility that is provided when Corvus has been applied in a field. Wheat can be rotated in as little as four months, Barley, soybeans, sweet corn and popcorn in as little as nine months.
Here, Corvus is still providing great residual control 20 days after treatment when applied post-plant and pre-emerge at 5.6 fluid ounces with two pints of atrazine.
When applied to V2 corn at 5.6 fluid ounces with two pints of atrazine, Corvus shows quick control of weeds just five days after application.
Corvus plus atrazine provides significant advantages over Lumax, Lexar, and Verdict, including unparalleled residual control. Corvus controls a wide variety of grass and broadleaf weeds and can be mixed well with fluid fertilizer carriers. Furthermore, Corvus is used at ounces per acre vs. pints or quarts per acre required with other herbicides, and Corvus has an application window of 30 days pre-plant.
In summary, Corvus herbicide delivers proven one-pass performance with burndown, residual and reactivation. Weed control lasts in varying weather conditions all season long (at 5.6 fl oz/A), from wet to hot and dry conditions. The two modes of action of Corvus help control weeds resistant to glyphosate, PPO- and triazine herbicides. With rapid burndown of weeds, Corvus is perfect for any tillage program and can be used at very low use rates.
