Fugitive Slave Act
★Part of a group of laws
 from the “Compromise
 of 1850”. Antislavery
 advocates gained
 admission to California
 as a free state.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin
★Harriet Beecher Stowe
 created this novel in
 1852. It changed the
 way people viewed
 slavery. It demanded
 that the US abolish
 slavery with the
 promise of freedom
 and equality.
Harriet Beecher
★She is known for
 writing “Uncle Tom’s
 Cabin”. She based this
 book on her personal
 experiences. The state
 of Kentucky where she
 lived, was a slavery
 state.
Kansas Nebraska
★This act repealed the
 Missouri Compromise
 and allowed slavery in
 the territory North of
 the 36, 30. It would be
 decided by the
 residents of the
 territories.
John Brown
★John Brown was an
 abolitionist, trying to rid
 of slavery along with
 others. He was a man
 of action. In 1859, he
 led 21 men on a raid in
 Virginia. Later on, most
 of Brown’s men were
 eventually killed off
 under the control of
 Robert E. Lee.
Popular
★This was a pre-Civil
 War doctrine, that
 asserted the rights of
 individuals living in a
 newly organized
 territory to decide the
 vote of their territorial
 legislature whether or
 not slavery would be
 permitted there.
Dred
★In 1847, Dred went to
 court to sue for his
 freedom and finally
 after 10 years his case
 was brought to the
 United States Supreme
 Courts. There in court,
 it was decided that
 Africans could never
 become citizens
Lincoln/ Douglas
★This was a debate
 between Abraham
 Lincoln and Stephen
 Douglas over one of
 Illinois United States
 senate seats.
★Lincoln ended up
 losing this debate but it
 helped him win the
 President Election.
Jefferson Davis
★Davis was an
 American Statesman
 leader of the
 confederacy during the
 time of the Civil War.
★From 1861-1865, he
 served as the president
 of the Confederate
 States.
Secede
★In a federal union, to
  secede would be
  withdrawing from
  membership.
★People can be
  withdraw in an alliance,
  or even a political or
  rebellious organization.
Confederate States
★From 1861-1865, this
 was a form of
 government set up by
 Southern Slaves that
 would declare their
 secession from the
 U.S.
Fort Sumter
★The shots that started
 the Civil War were held
 at the Battle of Fort
 Sumter.
★Fort Sumter was a
 third masonry sea fort
 in South Carolina.
Border State
★The border states in
 the Civil War were slave
 states that shared a
 border with free states.
★Delaware, Maryland,
 Virginia, Kentucky and
 Missouri
Robert E. Lee

★Career Military officer
  who commanded the
  Confederate Army of
  Northern Virginia during
  the Civil War.
Blockade
★The isolating or closing
  off of a place such as a
  harbor, city, or port by
  ships to prevent them
  from entering or
  exiting.
Battle of Bull Run
★Union and Confederate
 armies clashed in
 Manassas Junction.
 This was known as the
 first major land battle in
 the Civil War.
Ulysses S. Grant
★18th President of the
 United States.
★Held a dominant role in
 the second half of the
 Civil War.
Battle of Shiloh
★Also known as the
 Battle of Pittsburg
 Landing.
★A union under control
 of Grant, moved
 forward to Tennessee.
 The Confederates
 pulled a surprise attack
 on Grant’s army.
★They had failed the
 2nd Day
Cavalry
★These were soldiers
 who fought, mounted
 on horseback.
★This was a very
 sufficient way to fight in
 the war.
Antietam

★Historic site in
  northwestern
  Maryland, scene of a
  major Civil War battle in
  1862.
54th
★It was an all black
  regiment, except for
  the leaders. If all blacks
  fought well, they could
  have a shot at fighting
  in the wars.
Emancipation
★In 1863, our President
 Abraham Lincoln
 issued the
 Emancipation
 Proclamation which
 stated that anyone that
 was held as a slave,
 was free.
Copperhead
★Copperheads where
 Northerners who were
 opposing the Civil War.
 The name copperhead
 was one they chose for
 striking without
 warning like the snake
 did.
Conscription

★Compulsory
 enrollment, especially
 for the armed forces;
 draft.
Bounty
★Usually a payment or
 reward offered by a
 group as an incentive
 for the accomplishment
 of a task mainly not
 associated with the
 group.
Clara Barton
★A pioneer American
 teacher and a nurse
 during the Civil War. At
 the time, women were
 just beginning to work,
 so Barton helped
 others with careers.
Battle of
★General Robert E. Lee
 centered his army
 around Gettysburg.
 Lee attacked the
 Unions resulting in
 severe fighting there.
Siege of Vicksburg

★The final and major
 military action in the
 Vicksburg Champaign
 of the Civil War.
William Tecumseh
★Sherman served as a
 general in the Union
 Army.
★He received an award
 for most outstanding
 command of military
 strategy.
Appomattox Court
★This was the final
 Battle for Robert E. Lee
 before the confederate
 surrendered to the
 Union Army.
★This was one of the
 last battles in the
 American Civil War.
Thirteenth
★This amendment
 abolishes slavery along
 with involuntary
 servitude. But is legal if
 it is used as a
 punishment for a
 crime.
