Arctic Monkeys ‘When the sun goes down’ Opening shot – establishes the main character, setting, and mood of the video. Long shot – once again shows setting, character is looking at the camera; showing awareness- connoting how she maybe isn’t intimidated by it. Mid shot – Shows the characters occupation, and her ‘in action’. The shot connotes she isn’t ashamed as she appears to be smiling.
Long shot – shows the main character meeting her client, the setting and lack of light connotes a foreboding sense of danger. Close up of a winding staircase – an interesting and intriguing shot, connoting that the story is complicated and seems to never end. Long shot of the two main characters – the setting connotes a very dingy, dirty and suspicious area in which the characters are located, therefore connoting that both their relationship and her job are very sordid and ‘shady’.
Mid shot - Change of setting, focuses on establishing the relationship between the two characters and the context of it. CU – similar to the opening shot, therefore establishing him as a main character in the video, along with the girl in the opening shot. CU – The sinister expression of the character in this shot, and the dark, dreary weather, connotes a dark, twisted path the story may take.
Est/Long Shot – although the shot is out of focus, the audience is then able to work out for themselves what the shot could contain. I would say that the shot is of traffic at night; its very simple, yet very effective. CU – Another close up shot of the main character; showing a passing of time, and how she is still stuck in the same pattern in her life as she was when the audience are first introduced to her. ES – Shows the dingy, dirty, ‘scummy’ area in which this girl locates herself. The location connotes a poor/working class area, and also connotes that the story matches the area, as the main characters story appears to be quite disheartening and gloomy.
CU – Another CU of the main character, showing a pass of time, and connoting she is still unhappy with her life, and that it seems to be going nowhere. MS – The shot shows the the relationship between the two main characters, and how the girl is reluctant to go with the man. CU – Another CU of the main character, maybe used at the same points in the music. It seems as if the director of the video really wanted the audience to understand this character as quickly as possible.
ES/LS – Various frantic moving montage of shots that lasts for quite a long period of time, matches the tempo of the music, and really adds to the intensity of the action. It could also be interpreted as a POV of the driver, looking for the girl. CU – This is a quick shot shown inbetween the frantic scenes of traffic, showing that the girl is oblivious to the frantic behaviour of the person looking for her.
CU – Time remapping is used during this shot to match the fast forwarded frantic shots it is slotted in between.
MS – Slotted in between the frantic action. The cross-cutting shows how generic the girls life is, connoting she does the same thing day in day out. Another snippet of the frantic, quick moving action. LS – Once again reinstating that the main character’s life never differs.
LS – Shows the main character delving into drug dealing and purchasing. The wet weather connotes that the area has a dreary and depressing atmosphere. MS – Shows the main character moving onto a new client. MS – Cross-cutting to what’s going on in the other main characters life; grief is being caused by the girl and his relationship with her.
CU – A convention within this video is that there are many facial shots in which the audience are purposely made to solely focus on the characters emotions. ES/LS – Showing the dingy, scummy area where the main characters are situated and spend most of their time. LS – Shows her resuming to her usual spot where she resides everyday.
LS – A shot of the band, incorporating the band into the action. They add in 2 second snippets of random, frantic shots of traffic, to keep the high octane intensity of the action going. ECU – Once again the audience are made to focus on the girls emotions.
CU – A still shot of the cards; connoting a magicians environment. More random snippets of the camera frantically moving about in traffic (Time-remapping)
MS – Time remapping is used to keep up the pace of the action, and also so it keeps in time with the up tempo music. CU – Another shot focussing on the girls emotions. More frantic shots that are intertwined with the action-matching the beat of the music.
The fast paced shots are slotted in between the action between the main characters.
CU – This shot clearly depicts the status and control within the relationship. MS – Shows this character to be a joke. Setting has changed. CU – Another shot of solely her face, making the audience focus on what she is going through.
