- 4. TYPES OF ILLNESS • Non-infectious illnesses Have different causes. Injuries or poor diet can make us ill. • Infectious illnesses. Caused by harmful bacteria or viruses. Can be: Contagious : When an ill person transmit the illness to a health one. Non-contagious. Tetanus and salmonellosis are non contagious illness

These bacteria are called pathogenic bateria Bacterial meningitis Affected area. Nervous system Salmonellosis Affected area. Digestive system Bronchitis Affected area. Bronchi in respiratory system.

PREVENTING AND TREATING INFECTIOUS ILLNESSES Harmful bacteria can enter our bodies through Respiratory System Digestive System Wounds and Cuts HOW CAN WE PREVENT INFECTIONS • Disinfect wounds •Wash your hands before eating •Wash uncooked food •Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze •Do not share eating utensils VACCINES • Can prevent some illnesses •Vaccines introduce into our bodies the micro – organisms or virus that is making us ill. •Teh body reacts to the virus and produces substances to destroy it. •If the micro-organism or virus returns, our body will recognise it and fight against it. HOW CAN WE TREAT INFECTIONS • Infections caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics •Infections caused by fungi are treated with anti fungal medicines •Infestions caused by viruses are only treated with medicines that help to reduce symptoms.
