English Spanish
Today is Monday Hoy es lunes
What day is it tomorrow? a es manaña?
We use el to express ‘on’ when referring to a particular
day of the week and los to express ‘on’ when the action
occurs repeatedly:
I’m not dancing on Saturday = No bailo el bado
I don’t study on Saturdays = No estudio bados
Revision : Using days of weeks in conversations
1 Telling dates
Lesson objectives
In today’s lesson we will learn about asking
and telling dates
Dates
Now that we know how to tell what day it is,
let us also learn how to tell the date
It is essential to know the names of the
months for this
Months = Mes
mes . . .? means ‘In what month….?’
Let’s get started…
Names of months
English Spanish
January enero
February febrero
March marzo
April abril
May mayo
June junio
July julio
August agosto
September
septiembre (or
setiembre)
October octubre
November noviembre
December diciembre
not capitalized
If you notice carefully, most of the names
of months in Spanish are similar to their
English versions
Eg:
February = febrero
May = mayo
June = junio
July = julio
Remembering names of months
If you remember the numbers from 0-15 well, it is very
simple to form the remaining. For example:
6 = Seis
16 = Dieciséis (note the accent mark)
26 = Veintiséis (note the accent mark)
36 = Treinta y seis
7 = Siete
17 = Diecisiete
27 = Veintisiete
37 = Treinta y siete
Do you remember
Lets now learn how to ask
‘What is today’s date?’
As we know, in Spanish, possession (eg:
today’s) is shown by using ‘de’ which also
translates to ‘of’ (eg: today’s -> of today)
Hence, we will ask
‘What is (the) date of today?’
Asking dates
Asking dates
What is today’s date?
(What is the date of today?)
l es la fecha de hoy?
Remember : With ‘what + is (es)
we use ¿Cuál?
We learnt earlier, that Cuál is usually used
before 'es' and other forms of 'ser' to mean
‘What’
What is (the) date of today? = ¿ l es la
fecha de hoy?
Do you remember?
To tell dates we say:
the + number + of + month
=
el + number (except for 1st) + de + month
We will learn how to tell years in future,
for now we’ll focus on telling dates of
the month
Telling dates
Hoy es…
el + number (except for 1st) + de + month
Example :
el ocho de enero
=
the 8th of January (January 8th)
Telling dates
To tell the first day of each month we don’t
use uno, we use primero
el primero de enero
=
the 1st of January (January 1st)
First day of the month
May 5th el cinco de mayo
February 3rd el tres de febrero
December 25th el veinte y cinco de
diciembre

Las Fallas is one of the most famous festival in
Valencia
Las Fallas is undoubtedly one of the most unique
and crazy festivals in Spain
Spain is a country known for its unique
and odd fiestas
Valencia, a quiet city with a population of just
over 1 million, swells to an estimated three
million flame-loving revelers during Las Fallas
celebrations
Culture leaf : Las Fallas
Culture leaf : Las Fallas
Las Fallas literally means
‘the fires’ in Valencian
The focus of the fiesta is the
creation and destruction
of ninots (‘puppets’ or ‘dolls’),
which are huge cardboard,
wood, paper-machè and
plaster statues
A popular theme is poking fun
at corrupt politicians and
Spanish celebrities The children’s falla in calle Poeta Altet
Culture leaf :
The ninots remain in place until
March 19th, the day known
as La Cremá (the burning)
Starting in the early evening, young
men with axes chop cleverly-hidden
holes in the statues and stuff them
with fireworks
The crowds start to chant, the
streetlights are turned off, and all of
the ninots are set on fire at
exactly 12am
The same falla blazing
In the next lesson, we will learn how to ask
and tell about age and birthdays
What’s next?
