Although candidates grew up with computer labs, their future students grew up with mobile devices, often from birth.
Through a series of grants over 5 years, the education building was equipped with new IWB, new computers, new software, and new video studio.
In our area, the two m;ost popular brands of IWB are Promethean and SMART. Knowing that our candidates needed to be familiar with both, a mixture of these boards were installed and are taught to all candidates.
An ipad mobile lab is being utilized in methodology classes. Students are allowed to learn the way that their future students will learn- with just in time access to information. Allowing students “mobile” technology also increases collaboration among candidates.
A green screen production room was added in 2012. Teacher education candidates create virtual lessons that are shared with area classrooms. Next we will look at a short clip created to demonstrate the 5 senses.

But it was not simply hardware that needed to change. Educational technology has shifted from being a software focused industruy to a web based industry. Web 2.0 tools and free web resources have also revolutionized the field.
Another exciting initiative came with the development of virtual field experiences.
So as you can see, we were facing many difficulties surrounding field expeirences. New mandates imposed upon K12 teachers also caused them reluctance to let our candidates into classrooms. Seeing these difficulties, NSU COE decided to explore the world of virtual field experiences.
Our candidates have continuously said that they learn by watching one another teach. With the new technology equipment available, level 1 experiences now not only include watching live lessons remotely and video demonstrations, but also include a library of videos provided by previous student teachers. All student teachers are now required to submit two video mini lessons. These lessons are stored on LiveText and used by faculty to discuss best practices in methodology, management and technology use in the classroom
Level 2 and 3 experiences, where candidates must interact with K-12 students, proved to be more challenging. Our first initiative was storytime with the colonels. Starting with the simple idea of candidates practicing their storytelling skills, storytime has grown to a weekly broadcast to schools across the nation. Every Friday morning that Nicholls State is in session, candidates broadcast a “storytime” with a developmentally appropriate theme. Although through this medium our candidates cannot see the students that they are speaking to, the interaction from this Prek classroom shows the young students can’t tell.
In addition to the live broadcast, we store storytime videos on youtube and itunes U. The latest initiative has come with Level 3 field experiences. “Colonel Chat” began 3 semesters ago….
Our next initiative was Colonel Chat. In Colonel Chat, junior and senior teacher education candidates tutored 5th grade students in remote schools.
