2. Gladiator Poster Analysis
• The poster employs a number of methods in order to attract the audience and make them
aware of the movie and its key themes and ideas.
• Colour is used throughout in order to attract attention and reinforce the creator’s wishes.
Yellow the colour of sand is used throughout, sand is of course a key feature of the sword and
sandal genre immediately asserting and gold, stereotypical swords and sandals colours. Title
is clearly prominent in gold while the motto blends somewhat into the back. The gold clear
writing of Gladiator fits instantly into the colour scheme used alerting the audience to the
genre and topic of the movie.
• Russell Crow is clearly in the foreground dominating the poster overall as an A list actor he
immediately brings appreciation and a seal of quality to the movie, which it would be in dire
need to due to the fact that the sword and sandal genre had been abandoned prior to the
creation of the movie. Furthermore he looks ominous, strong and is very obviously a
gladiator. As gladiators are a very well-known part of roman history the thought of such a
fantastic actor as Russell Crow playing a gladiator immediately attracts attention as an actor
of his calibre would do the time zone proud.
• The largest text is that of the slogan “A Hero Will Rise” this impact fully and easily asserts the
point of the movie and the journey the hero is about to undergo. This immediately attracts a
passer-by and also reinforces the prominent character of Russell Crow who is obviously the
hero the poster discusses.
