This document outlines a proposed teacher leadership project to create an after-school Advanced Placement (AP) tutorial program. The path of learning requires that students demonstrate the mastery of both skills and concepts in any class. In the traditional model of mastery in higher education, both formative and summative assessments are conducted via a rigid set of assignments, activities, and tests that require all students to perform the same set of skills for each concept mastery demonstration. The idea of choice in the classroom is a concept of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and while choice can be easily produced for content delivery (text, audio, video, interactive materials), assessment of both skills and concept mastery is not addressed in most classrooms. This leads to the development of homogenous courses and assignments where many students show objective mastery via exams and subjective mastery via writing. Students can be given choice on their demonstration of mastery without undue burden on the faculty member while also creating increased mastery of skills important to their respective fields. In business, a fungible asset is one that is mutually interchangeable. In this case, I am applying the concept of fungibility to learning assessment. Faculty can give students choice; but, in order to create fungible assignments that do not, faculty must ensure that proper design of instruction and assessment is used. In order to facilitate the assessment of fungible assignments, faculty must be able to create clear and concise criteria for assessment that tie directly to objectives for learning. Allowing students to choose how they show their knowledge of concepts and mastery of skills gives them control over their learning and ultimately improving educational outcomes.

Effective online communication in higher education requires several different interaction treatments: teacher-student, student-student, student-content, and student-learning management system. This literature review focuses on how to build effective online communication for college courses. Findings indicate that effective online communication is associated with educators who build the aforementioned interaction treatments into their course design, follow established principles of good education previously identified for face-to-face instruction, provide instructor presence, and integrate a variety of interactive tools to accommodate learner preferences and learner necessities.

Currently, warfighters are trained predominantly through live events, but live training is expensive and can not be provided at a frequency to maintain optimal performance among staffs. Additionally, Gen Y will be entering the joint staff workforce by 2014. Recent advances in virtual world technologies may be used to improve the situation. This paper discusses some work to train small staffs in a collaborative environment. It aims to increase customer contact hours and reinforces skills learned in traditional face-to-face training courses without additional travel costs.

One of the legal implications to consider when developing a blended, single-signature multi-featured lending plan is whether the closed-end Fed Box disclosures can be given timely under Reg Z and applicable state contract law. The answer is yes, they can. By providing the disclosures at the time of advance, prior to or with the disbursement of funds, credit unions satisfy the timing requirements under Reg Z and state law. Computer-based instruction – a proven approach – must adapt to fulfill the growing needs of military and interagency training. This future vision requires innovative toolsets to help bridge the gap between academic, individual instruction and large-scale, mission rehearsals. Given the constrained training budgets of today and tomorrow, one must innovate to enable team training. This paper provides analysis for the existing military training structure and offers insights into how it can be adapted to be lightweight, agile, and more cost efficient at training small teams in preparation for existing large scale exercises. This approach fosters mastery by providing the training audience autonomy of time and team – enabling small team training at a time and place of their choosing. Our innovation’s simplicity has demonstrated the powerful capability of a distributed and immersive application. The paper closes with lessons learned gathered from exercises conducted between 2010 through the present.

Nearly ten years ago, the training and modeling and simulations (M&S) communities teamed up to tackle a burgeoning issue – the use of commercial technologies and games in NATO. The challenge came from the cultural change inherent in the domain. Small businesses were the leaders in the game space, yet they were perceived as risks among acquisition authorities. The proponents pushed forward by forming a Modeling and Simulation Group workshop series called “Exploiting Commercial Technologies and Games for Use in NATO” to bridge the cultural gaps. Over ten years, twelve workshops have convened. Successes have been achieved and predictions made five years ago have been attained. This report provides (a) findings such as trends and possible explanations for factors contributing to attainment of workshop predications; (b) trends within technology, industry, and government with respect to commercial technologies and games for education and training; and (c) recommendations for consideration in planning future MSG commercial technology and games workshops.

n my work as a teacher educator over the past twenty years, the preparation of teacher leaders has been a guiding force (Phelps 1994). Informal surveys of my teacher candidates reveal that most intend to become leaders in their schools. Yet, achieving this goal involves more than a targeted outcome and willing participants. Helping teachers become leaders requires not only a desire to meet the challenge but also a definite plan. In this article, I present a model for shaping teacher leaders. Teacher educators, school administrators, and current teacher leaders can apply this tool to different work settings as they help more teachers to become leaders. Defining a Vision Before teachers can adopt leadership as a possibil- ity, they must understand its meaning. Definitions of leadership abound; however, sometimes the simplest is best. In this case, Barth’s (2001) view of leadership as “making happen what you believe in” is ideal (85). By removing job position from the picture, this definition suggests that anyone can be a leader. As Daniel- son (2006) indicates, teacher leaders are not typically appointed to a designated position, yet they comple- ment administrative leaders. Implicit also in this leadership viewpoint is knowing what one believes or espousing a vision and understanding how to achieve that vision. Having a vision is an essential building block for teacher leadership (Barth 2001). At the preservice level teacher candidates should articulate their beliefs as part of professional education coursework and field experiences through journal entries and other reflective activities. Administrators and mentor teachers can assist beginning and veteran teachers with the refinement of their belief systems, going beyond the oft-touted “all students can learn” mantra. Time at faculty meetings can be devoted to sharing diverse beliefs about teaching and learning and discussing how teachers’ beliefs influ- ence classroom practices. Administrators can encourage teachers to post vision statements on their Web sites and their classroom walls as well as include such statements on course materials provided to students and parents. Here is a teacher’s sample vision: This school and my classroom should be a community of students and teachers who feel safe enough to make mistakes, to share insights, and to take risks. The pri- mary goal of the learning environment should be to engage teachers and learners in the process of thinking. In creating this environment, careful planning and posi- tive relationships are essential elements. Because modeling makes a difference in learning, I will strive to uphold high standards and expectations and to develop better problem-solving skills. Helping Teachers Become Leaders PATRICIA H. The professional development school initiatives show the greatest promise in school reform due to collaborative efforts in teacher preparation. Educators in both public schools and in universities must work together in the preparation of teachers who are culturally, socially and instructionally responsive to student diversity. This lofty preparation aim begins with selecting the most promising teacher candidates for admittance into the program. The author describes an admissions procedure that has proven to be not only efficient and effective, but reflects the collaborative values of the program. For over a decade, advocates of educational reform have supported professional development schools (PDSs) as a way for school and university partners to promote simultaneous renewal of both institutions. PDS aims are now commonplace: (a) provide exemplary education for preservice teachers, (b) support continuing professional development of experienced teachers, (c) engage in the renewal of curriculum and instruction, and (d) involve schools and universities in collaborative research. Essential to these aims is the collaborative process. Establishing trust, recognizing cultural differences, and breaking perceived roles between school teachers and university faculty are key if partnerships are to be anything more than traditional in nature. University instructors, including teacher educators, are entering into cooperative working ventures with more frequency than ever before. Critical to the successful attainment of any partnership project are the people involved and the common commitment to program quality and coherence. In the ongoing process of developing, nurturing, and maintaining partnerships, one can expect to confront both predictable and unforeseen obstacles. Sharing information on program structures and systems will help advance the development of university and K-12 partnerships. The purpose of this article is twofold: (a) to describe, and (b) to analyze an admissions procedure, which reflects the values of the program and efficiently and effectively promotes the involvement of K-12 personnel in what is traditionally a university decision. To this end, we briefly discuss the history of this partnership and the key values that drive our work. Next, we elaborate on the admissions process and how it reflects those values in linking the university and schools. In taking stock of where we have made progress and where we have not, we examine the perceptions of major stakeholders in this process.
