What is CPD?
Continued professional development
My take:
“CPD consists of any educational activity which
helps to maintain or develop knowledge,
problem-solving, technical skills or professional
performance standards to delivery better quality”

Why is CPD important?
• Employers require us to display & evidence:
- Our skills are relevant
- Our knowledge is up to date
- We have an understanding of what the topical
issues are(or what is happening) in our chosen
profession
- We are aware of future trends and issues
(threats and opportunities)

Qualifications are the beginning
• Often just getting a qualification is only the
beginning. Post qualification learning is becoming
more significant across a range of professions.
• Updating knowledge on a continuing basis is
essential for successful delivery, credibility, career
progression – especially in a time where the „job
for life‟ has disappeared.

CPD includes 'formal' activities, e.g. courses, conferences
and workshops, as well as self-directed activities such as
mentoring, shadowing, engagement in online forums and
directed reading (almost anything – “with caution”).
Importantly:
We need to be able to demonstrate (or evidence) that
we are improving relevant knowledge and skills in our
subject area (i.e., coaching, management) then it
counts!
So what does count as CPD?
