PHASESOF MENSTRUAL CYCLE
OBJECTIVES:
• Describe the four phases of menstrual
cycle
• conduct Quarter 3 Module 1 Activity
No. 6 “MARK MY CALENDAR”
A woman
can get
pregnant
any time of
the month.
Your period must
come every
28 days.
Exercise is good
for a women
having a period..
Your period stops
when you get in the water.
It is safer to have sexual
intercourse
7 days before or after the
menstruation.
Q1. Why do women menstruate?
How long does a regular menstrual cycle last?
Q2. What are the hormones released during the
follicular phase?
What happens during the first 13 days of the
cycle?
Q3. What hormone triggers the release of an
egg from the ovary?
Why do we have to know our ovulation period?
Q4. What happens if sperm cells meet an egg in
the fallopian tube?
What happens to egg if fertilization does not
occur?
PERIOD - In this phase, progesterone level drops causing the
uterine lining to shed. It lasts for 5 days but usually it’s from 3-7
days.
FOLLICULAR -t he pituitary gland releases FSH to mature the
follicles inside the ovary. Egg will mature up to 13th day.
OVULATORY - Pituitary gland releases LH to rupture the follicle
and release the egg from the ovary. Egg survives for 12 - 24
hours. This is the 14th day.
LUTEAL -The remainder of ruptured follicle forms a corpus
luteum and designed to die for 14 days. It will shrink if egg in
unfertilized.
What if your
cycle is irregular,
like too short or
too long? How
do you
determine your
fertile days?
• For example, one month may last 22 days, another 27,
another 31 and so on. After taking these notes, you’ll
need to use a formula: Subtract 18 days from the
shorter cycle and 11 days from the longest
menstrual cycle. For example: If the shortest cycle was
22 days and your longest cycle was 31 days, then 22-
18=4 and 31-11=20.
• Therefore, your fertile period will fall between
days 4 and 20 of the cycle, which is about 17
days. Of course, this estimate is inaccurate and
long, but if you’re trying to get pregnant, you
should have sex during these days.
Let’s check your understanding….
A woman had her 1st day of period on the 7th day
of the month(February 7), assuming her monthly
cycle is regular,
• 1. What day of the month will her egg cell be
released from the ovary?(February _?
• 2. If a sperm happens to enter her fallopian tube
on February 5, will she get pregnant?
• 3. If a sperm happens to enter her fallopian tube
on February 22, will she get pregnant?
• 4. If her menstrual cycle is 28 day cycle, when
will she menstruate again?
ENRICHMENT:
• How do birth control pills stop ovulation?
