23. Sustainable Mobility
Sustainable Mobility is a system of urban mobility able to conciliate the right to mobility with the
need to reduce the so-called negative externalities associated with it. In practice, it is all those
actions that make possible to ensure the urban movements of people reducing their negative
effects in terms of harmful emissions, smog, noise pollution, traffic congestion and accidents.

Una volta le mappe erano il nostro business, ora sono la base irrinunciabile su cui creare servizi evoluti. Da Map Company a Location Services company
Optional slide with bragging rights
We are global:
8,000 people. 200 offices. 56 countries. 1 vision. 1 purpose.
We have 30+ years of mapping experience and location technology
We‘ve mapped 200 countries around the world
We believe in the power of location data to transform our lives:
Our fleet consists of 400+ Lidar cars collecting data for our maps
700,000 3D data points are collected per second per car – meaning our fleet collects 28TB+ of location data every day
1M+ changes are made to the map every day
Today:
HERE maps are on board 100M+ vehicles and counting
4 out of 5 in-car navigation systems in Europe and North America use HERE maps
And these numbers just keep on going up
Optional slide with historic achievements
Mapping has always been about discovery: For centuries, 2D maps guided us through the unknown to our destination. But we’re no longer limited by the edges of our physical maps
In the mid-80s, HERE Technologies began with the simple goal to digitize mapping, building our first digital maps of California, and to pioneer in-car navigation systems
Over the next 3 decades, as NAVTEQ, Nokia and HERE Technologies, we’ve mastered mapmaking and built a legacy in mapping technology, developing maps for cars, web and mobile
Today, we're creating living 3D maps that grow upwards, breathing with layers of information and insights…
… And we’re transforming maps into location technology
At HERE Technologies, we’re reinventing the concept of maps by unlocking the power of location intelligence to positively change today’s urban life and inspire innovative business development
We’re making sense of the world through the lens of location, using location data to answer today’s fundamental questions and those we’ll be asking tomorrow
In the mid-80s, that question was “how do I get from A to B?”
Then it became “What’s the fastest route?” and then “What’s my ETA?”
As more and more devices, vehicles and infrastructure generate more and more data, these questions are becoming increasingly complex:
When exactly will my delivery arrive?
By how long will the bad weather delay my arrival?
Do I have enough battery in my EV to get me to my destination, considering the AC is on and I’m taking the hilly route?
How long will it take to park at my destination, and can I reserve a parking spot ahead of time?
How can my autonomous car drive itself safely in the way I want it to, know the best route and know where to park?
Optional slide with recent achievements
To answer these questions, we’re picking up the pace
Over the last 3 years, we’ve transformed from a map company to a data company:
In 2015, the consortium of car companies Audi, BMW and Daimler acquired HERE from Nokia
With a new Leadership Team in place, we advanced our vision and strategy beyond the map
Within 6 months, we launched the development of the HERE Open Location Platform (OLP) – a comprehensive platform that solves the problem of fragmented and disparate data sources in a collaborative environment, enabling businesses to monetize their most valuable asset: data
And we implemented new services for vehicles that draw and deliver real-time sensor data to and from partnering vehicles
Over the last year we’ve picked up the pace even more:
We now have 4 new investors and many more strategic partners, not only from the automotive industry but from across the technology industry
We released Version 1.0 of the HERE OLP
And today, we’re building the Reality IndexTM – a real-time digital representation of the physical world – a technology that powers the concept of maps to exponential possibility

Our planet is facing numerous challenges:
Today, there are 7.6 billion people and the population is continuing to grow rapidly
Cities are growing in both size and number:
75% of people are now living in cities
1 in 5 people lives in a city with >1M inhabitants
“Megacities” (cities with >10m inhabitants) are on the rise: By 2030, the number of megacities will increase from 31 to 41 globally
With this growing population and growth in size and number of cities comes increased congestion and pollution and a depletion of resources, all of which negatively impact citizens’ quality of life
To address these challenges, we need to answer some fundamental questions:
Can we make society efficient enough to need only half the resources we currently use?
What if there were a tool that could predict each of our mobility needs each day?
What if we could reduce traffic to such an extent that our air became cleaner and our cities greener?
What if we could make transportation so efficient that traffic jams no longer existed?
And what if we could make transportation so safe that traffic accidents no longer took place?
Addressing today’s challenges will involve the collection, analysis and sharing of millions of terabytes of vehicular, environmental and physical infrastructure data each year
But data is insignificant without context and limited in value without scale
Today, most data generated resides in silos, which constrains our collective ability to build new classes of services that can address today’s challenges and those of the future
Maximizing the utility of data requires overcoming this fragmentation and that calls for greater data collaboration
A key catalyst for greater data collaboration lies in location data
Every piece of data has a location, meaning that it can serve as a unifying element for diverse data types
Location is the “glue” that connects disparate data sources, giving the output generated rich context and increased relevance
Introducing the Reality IndexTM:
A real-time digital representation of the physical world
The Reality Index™ includes 3D mapping and live traffic from across road and transportation networks
Billions of data points are gathered every day, and machine learning is applied to support rapid map update cycles
It will serve as a digital geospatial model that aids vehicles, drones, on-demand mobility services, precise indoor and outdoor goods tracking, and other advanced services
Everything sits on the HERE Open Location Platform
We’ve opened that up to a whole new world of possibilities
It’s unlocking an unprecedented amount of opportunity for us and our partners
Extraordinary amounts of data come from multiple sources: OEM sensors, smart city infrastructure, urban mobility services and IoT devices
