Let’s talk about summer holidays
Discuss
Talk with a small group.
• What did you do during the summer holiday?
Expanding Vocabulary
In English, don’t repeat the same word too often.
Use synonyms.
Holiday = vacation, break
Examples:
• What did you do during the summer holiday?
• I went to France during the summer break.
• We had a great summer vacation.
Sunny Days
Many people go to the beach
on holiday. They like to be in
the sunshine.
Look at the photos. What can
you see?
Sunbathe
(verb)
- sit or lie in the
sun
Sunbathe
Examples:
“My sister is so boring. Whenever we go to the beach,
she just sunbathes! I want to go play in the sea!”
“I love sunbathing in the garden during the afternoon.”
“It’s hard to find a place to sunbathe when the beach is
so busy.”

Examples
“Look at Fred. He has an amazing tan.” (noun)
“I’m so jealous of Suzie. She tans so easily.” (verb)

Note
In English, we don’t say someone becomes “black”. We
don’t often say someone gets “dark”.
Instead, use “tan”.
“Wow, you’ve gotten really black.”
“Wow, you’ve gotten really tanned.”
“I don’t see why people want to get dark.”
“I don’t see why people want to get tanned.”

Note
When using the verb, you can simply say “burn”.

Tan line

Note
In English, we don’t say “white” very often.
“She had really white skin.”
“She had really pale skin.”
“He’s tanned now but usually he’s very white.”
“He’s tanned now but usually he’s very pale.”

During the summer holidays I went to Spain with my
family. It’s always rainy in England so we love
