2. Is that the end of the film?
In lots of horror films,
the audience is led to
believe that the film is
about to finish. But in
many cases there is one
more scare. For example
at the end of
Paranormal Activity,
Katie jumps up at the
camera to make the
audience jump.
This is the last shot of
Paranormal Activity.When
Katie jumps at the camera.
3. Is that the end of the film? Part 2
Another good example of a jump
scare is at the end of Nightmare on
Elm street where the character
think they have saved themselves.
But Freddie appears in the mirror in
the background killing one of the
main characters.
Another scare would be at the end
of Sinister.When the main
characters daughter is taken by the
monster in the night, when the
father is asleep thinking he had
stopped the monster.
4. From watching these films I have discovered that a lot of horror films like the
relax the viewer then startle them when they are not expecting it, to make
them have an even bigger fright.
Another thing I discovered is that a lot of horror films like to show the
audience that the film series hasn’t finished and that another film is coming
out in the future. By showing that the main antagonist is still alive.
Is that the end of the film? Part 3
5. In a lot of horror films you will see one member of the group of protagonists
wander off without the other members knowing. Often falling into trouble
with no way out. The characters who do this are most often the good looking
girls. This creates a ‘damsel in distress’ like motive where everyone in the
group tries to find them. Or it is sometimes the least liked character from the
audience and group and is often left to die.
An example of a damsel in distress would be in the film, Silent Hill
Retribution where the main protagonist leaves her friends to find her father.
Where’ve you gone?
6. Another example of a damsel in distress would be in the film, Jennifer's
Body. The example of the damsel being a girl is switched in this film as the
girl saves the boy from the monster. This builds more excitement as both the
protagonist and the antagonist are female. This allows the viewer to have a
change instead of just seeing girls walk into trouble all of the time.
Where’ve you gone? Part 2
7. Where’ve you gone? Part 2
The two images below are two examples of the least favored character walking
into trouble without anyone to help them. The photo on the left is from the film
‘Predators’. And the one on the right is from ‘AVP: AlienVS Predator’. In both
films these characters wandered off for there own benefits and found them
selves in trouble and the protagonists of the group chose not to help.
8. What'sWrong with these people?
Often in horror films the antagonist is someone who has gone
off the rails or has a mental illness.Or has a serious problem with
society and wants to kill everyone. This is something I picked up
on whilst watching horror films. The photo on the left is of the
two killers from Scream 1 . On the right is Michael Myers from
the Halloween Film series
