DRESS TO IMPRESS:
GRADUATION TO THE WORLD
OF WORK
July 27, 2014

So you’ve put in the hard work, completed the essays and aced the exams, now comes the most difficult part,
leaving the safety-net of university and entering the world of professional employment. We’ve all heard the
saying “you never get a second chance to make a first impression”, well that has never rung more true. Before
you utter a single word, employers are automatically placing a scrutinising eye over a multitude of non-verbal
cues including a firm hand-shake, a genuine smile and of course your visual presentation. So whether you’re
looking to secure an internship, placement or graduate role, presenting yourself in the best possible light is the
first step to achieving success.
Whilst style and clothing choice will not solely land you your dream position (it’s what’s inside that counts too),
fashion reveals a significant amount about your identity and character. Taking the time to dress with confidence
and appropriately for the organisation will signify to the employer that you are organised, trustworthy and

understand the company culture. But before you set off into mass hysteria, styling yourself for an interview
doesn’t have to be a complicated task. Here at La Vida, we want to alleviate some of that stress by providing
you with an easy-to-follow guide on how to dress for your impending interview.
The Conservative Company
When interviewing for sectors including finance, business and law, the key to dressing is to keep it simple. Avoid
anything that will detract from the purpose of why you are there such as bold prints, colour clashes, short-
sleeved shirts and gimmicky ties. The best option is to select a formal two-piece suit in a neutral hue (navy,
black or grey) and pair it with a classic, white long-sleeved shirt and a subtle print or block-coloured tie.
Tip: Footwear should be a continuation of your outfit, so keep them smart, sleek and sophisticated.

The Creative job
Achieving a balance between the creative, business and somewhat casual nature of the publishing, journalism
and media industries can lead to some interesting and often quirky clothing choices. Whilst a suit isn’t always
necessary, going completely casual won’t do either. Our sage advice would be to opt for sharp patterns and
colour coordination. Try a combination of a modern cut smart trouser with a printed shirt (checked or striped
preferably), which can be paired with a sweater to minimise the pattern. Footwear can be slightly more relaxed
by opting for a loafer, oxfords or lace-ups.

The Smart-Casual Dress Code
Nothing can be more confusing than receiving a pre-interview email stating “Dress code: smart casual”. The
trick to achieving this is to place more emphasis on the smart than the casual. Whilst jeans can be acceptable
for this scenario, keep them to a plain and darker wash. To retain a smart and business-ready look, try layering a

blazer over a smart shirt (printed or plain) and add a tie if you feel the occasion requires it. Footwear can follow
similar lines as the creative job interview, but whatever you do, never wear sports shoes.
Tip: The key to mastering the smart-casual dress code is ‘fit’. Ensure that your trousers are the correct leg
length – stopping just above the top of the shoe. For blazers, measure your chest before purchasing and avoid
the arm length dropping below the wrist.
