Su diseñador y creador fue Adrian D. Smith, arquitecto de origen
mexicoamericano. En un principio, el Burj Dubai iba a tener el
nombre de "GrolloTower", mediría 570 metros, lo cual lo convertiría
automáticamente en el edificio más alto del mundo, y
originalmente se planeaba construirlo en Australia. La forma del
rascacielos no tenía nada que ver con el diseño actual. Iba a tomar la
forma de un prisma con una punta iluminada. Sin embargo, el
actual diseño del Burj Dubai está basado en la forma geométrica de
una flor, la "Hymenocallis blanca" de seis pétalos, cultivada en la
región, y cuya armoniosa estructura ha dado inspiración a este
ambicioso proyecto. Pero, en definitiva, se involucionó para llegar a
transformarse en tres pétalos principales como nodos que se definen
como las "alas" o secciones laterales, las cuales serían parte del
hotel, oficinas o residencias.
