1.
2. Sony Music, which includes Sony Music Entertainment (SME), Sony Music Entertainment Japan (SMEJ)
and a 50% stake in publisher Sony / ATV, reported operating income up 31.1% year-on-year for the 12
months to March 31 2010 at $393m (£266m)
Sony says the increase of profit was due to the growth in sales for Michael Jackson catalogue product
(such as concerts, film and television, and sponsorships) as well as a year-on-year decrease in overhead
and restructuring costs.
Best-selling releases in 2010 included Glee The Music Volume 1 and 2, Alicia Keys’ The Element Of
Freedom, Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed A Dream and Michael Jackson’s This Is It soundtrack and catalogue.
The company adds music sales increased during its fourth fiscal quarter due to releases for example
Usher’s Raymond v Raymond, Ke$ha’s Animal andSade’s Soldier Of Love.
Sales for the fiscal year increased 35.0% year-on-year to $5.6bn (£3.8bn), although Sony says this is
largely the result of the consolidation of SME.
