9. 1989 – the year AGI was founded
• Berlin Wall came down
• UK’s Number 1 hit was Ride on Time by Black Box (Australia’s was Love Shack by the B-52’s)
• The Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize
• Taylor Swift & Daniel Radcliffe were born
• Both the Simpsons and Seinfeld debuted
• Nintendo released the first game boy
• World Wide Web was invented
• TV cameras were allowed into the House of Commons
• Navstar’s first operational GPS satellite (Block-II type) was launched into space
• Galileo Space probe was launched

• Email just beginning
• WWW just starting
• No mobile phones (called each
other on a landline phone)
• Non-web GIS was really the only
tool for geospatial for the next 15
years…..

• Climate Crisis – too much carbon released
• More national borders than any point in history – but fewer wars
• Over population? 7 Billion and still increasing
• Species extinction
• Expected Global Economic downturn
• Challenges to Capitalist & Political structures
• Just over 50% world population has access to the web
• Work has become global and 24/7
• People are more connected than ever before
• People have access to more information than ever before

12. Today in Geo
• General public still don’t understand the word Geospatial – but they do
understand Maps, Places & Location
• Only 7 of the Top 100 Geospatial Companies listed in 2018 were founded prior
to 2000
• Every company uses Location data for business
• Multiple generations to work with – Baby Boomer, X-Gen, Millennial..
• Geospatial is now a specialism in the global profession of Data
• Fears of misuse of data – GDPR, Ethics….
• Skills shortage in Location Data
• No longer need to be a coder, builder and operator – you can be one of these
and still be successful
