From Tidy Towns to Edible Towns
Here’s an idea for Tidy Towns and
similar groups! Why not plant food
producing plants instead of just ornamental ones? Indeed anyone can
plant fruit trees or bushes in their
own gardens. Why not extend it to
open public spaces. Think how nice
it would be to take a stroll around
your town and be able to pick an
apple to eat or a few blackcurrants
for example. It’s not a new idea, but
one that is being carried out successfully in other places as the following
article illustrates.
Four years ago, a group of residents
in the small English town of Todmorden decided to adopt an ambitious goal: by 2018, the whole town
would become completely "food independent," growing and raising all
of the food it needed itself, through
the Incredible Edible Todmorden
project.
Now, virtually every free piece of
land in the town is filled with food,

from yards in front of the police and
railway stations, to parks, schoolyards, backyards, and traffic roundabouts. Everything grown on public
land is free for anyone in town to
take. The nonprofit running the
project also offers classes in everything from baking bread to pickling.
As Liam Hinshelwood, a designer
who worked with the nonprofit,
wrote in the Guardian, this project is
a great example of the type of design
we need most, even though it might
not seem like design in the traditional sense:
“The answer is to design ‘what we
do’ rather than to simply design
‘things’. We must design the everyday items of our lives, landscapes,
our streets, our buildings, our services and institutions in a way that will
foster behaviours that will continue
to sustain us.”

Warning: Zombies to Take Over
Templemore College
The Media Department at Templemore
College (formerly St. Sheelan’s College)
are currently very busy preparing for
their upcoming Zombie movie production. It is envisaged that this movie will
be entered into film festivals both nationally and internationally. The location for
the shoot will be Templemore town and
its environs and filming is scheduled to
commence in mid November. The Zombie Movie will be produced by the Cartoon Animation (Level 6), Creative

Media and Media Production (Level 5)
students.
As this project will incorporate a large
volume of special effects make-up, supporting crew have been drafted in from
the hairdressing and beauty departments
in the college. As part of the preparation
for the shoot, both these departments and
the Media students took part in a special
effects makeup workshop facilitated by
their Media teachers Ciara O’Sullivan
and Nicola Welford. In addition, the

Eight Upperchurch Walking Weekend
8th, 9th, 10th November
The mountain village of Upperchurch in the
heart of Tipperary will hold its eighth annual
walking weekend on the 8th, 9th and 10th of
November. There will be a choice of over a
dozen walks along with several new events,
including a public preview and demonstration of Co. Tipperary's first climbing wall by
the Mid Tipp Hillwalkers.
As well as the walks and climbing, outdoor types will be catered for with a bushcraft display given by the Living Wilderness
bushcraft school from Co.Meath who will
demonstrate and explain wilderness survival
skills such as shelter and fire creation, water
filtration, cooking wild food, wood carving
and rope making from natural materials.
There will also be three organised cycles
over 25, 50 and 75 km starting at noon on
Sunday organised by the local cycling club.
Upperchurch is a place that holds dear the
old traditions and set dancing lessons and
traditional music sessions will be held over
the weekend. There will be displays of arts
and crafts and local photography. Walking
related stands will include advice on foot
problems, massages for the stiff and sore or
those who just like to be pampered as well as
information and advice on the Camino to
Santiago de Compostella in Spain from the
Irish Society of the Friends of St. James.
There will be a photographic display by Andrew Shakespeare LIPF who will have some
special offers during the weekend.

Climbing wall
The opening of the new €100,000 bouldering and climbing wall is eagerly anticipated

by the walking and climbing fraternity in
Tipperary. It is eight metres (26 ft) high with
different slopes and overhangs and the grips
can be adjusted to suit all levels of ability. A
viewing balcony opposite and halfway up
will give an entertaining spectacle to the casual spectator and those waiting their turn. Six
can use the wall at any one time with the help
of six helpers holding or “belaying” the safety ropes. The bouldering section can cater for
about eight climbers at the time giving a facility which can be used to involve up to
twenty people and age does not matter.
All levels of fitness are catered for on the
walks. For the beginners there is a newly developed, dead level, one kilometre walk beside the village and around the bog which
provided turf for the local inhabitants in days
gone by. At the other extreme the 18 km
Hills of Upperchurch walk on Saturday
morning traverses several hills and difficult
terrain and should only be attempted by the
very fit and experienced. In between there is
a large choice of walks, including two road
walks on Friday night and several intermediate walks on Saturday and Sunday. Upperchurch has three National Loop walks and
they are unusual in that they go mainly
through farmland rather than through forestry
plantations.
There's nothing like a good brisk walk to
whet the appetite and the inner walker,
climber, bushman or cyclist will be catered
for with a bowl of the famous Upperchurch
stew after each event.

A compelling play about a group of
friends that grew up together in Kerry
and emigrated to the States in the 80’s,
some of them stayed, some of them
came back, got married but they all
went their separate ways. Now they’re
all meeting up back in what was their
local village dancehall to celebrate the
return of one of their own Jack Flynn
who has flown single-handed across
the Atlantic in a small plane.
Beyond The Brooklyn Sky is an unapologetic theatrical soap opera, full of
sentiment and nostalgia, lovers and secrets, and is all the more enjoyable for
it. With shows such as The Shawshank
Redemption and I Keano under his
belt, director Peter Sheridan does a fantastic job marshaling the forces at to
create a memorable, moving and magnificent production that hits all the

emotional triggers. This production has
some of the best actors in the country
including Fair City star Una Kavanagh,
Tom Crean star and creator Aidan
Dooley, Game of Thrones star Vinnie
McCabe, you will be riveted from the
start.

Hedgerows are very important for wildlife and
over 1500 different insects and 64 species of
birds have been found on them. They provide
nesting sites for birds and allow creature’s safe
access across the countryside, far from the preying eyes of predators. Hawthorn is the main tree
species used in our native hedgerows. Their
flowers are in full bloom during May and field

Elderberry is a common shrub of the hedgerow
and garden. Starlings love the berries and drop
their seeds in new spots with a good dollop of
fertilizer. The weight of its berries can often
bend the branches and they have many different
uses. They can be made into wine and jam. The
leaves also contain a natural insecticide and
when crushed will deter insects. Elderberry can
survive harsh pruning and will send up multiple
new shoots each year. If left alone it can grow to
over 4 meters but most don’t get above two meters.
I think that blackberries are the most welcome
berry for people and wildlife. The hedgerow near
my house has been greeting me each day with
delicious ripe fruit. These are at their sweetest
after a cold spell as this brings the sugars to full
flavour. There are many ways to enjoy them including blackberry pie, with ice-cream or just eat
straight from the hedge. Foxes eat them as part
of their autumn diet and bees also drink the juice
of the blackberry.
Wild fruits of the hedgerow are very important
for wildlife and help them to survive the winter
months. If you are thinking of sowing a hedge
this autumn why not consider one that will benefit birds, insects and butterflies. Tidy towns and
residents group could explore their communities
and see what hedges are there and put in place
measures to conserve them.

North Tipp Macra Notes
As the winter begins to close in we reflect on
how well the year has gone for us so far. Many
competitions were entered and some won. We
are currently participating in all Macra competitions and intend to continuing to participate in as
many as we can going forward. Devilsbit Macra
travelled to Francis Cleere`s farm in Moyne two
weeks ago for the North Tipperary Round of

Beef and Sheep Stock judging There was a
great turnout by the club with over twenty members in attendance. The club won all four competitions on the night. Under 23 beef Donie
Fitzpatrick, over 23 beef Paudie Meade, under
23 sheep Niall Bourke, over 23. Congrats to all.
Last weekend a large contingent of North Tipp
members attended the National Conference Ral-

ly in Carlow. A great weekend was had. Only
two weeks until the Queen Of The Land festival
in Tullamore. It is the last big Macra festival of
the year and we look forward to supporting
Nenagh club member Una Ryan on what promises to be another fantastic weekend.

Series 4, no. 14. Anxiety. Progressive
relaxation and visualisation to relieve anxiety. The visualisation of the
inner wisdom.
I use another effective one, involving a
combination of progressive muscle relaxation and a visualisation about the
wisdom within us that guides us. The
wisdom is visualised as a wise being,
which can be a person, an animal, or a
presence. I find that different people
have different images of the wise being. Some have seen it as an eye, some
as their father, some as Jesus and so on.
This wise being is your spirit guide,
your helper, your guardian angel, whatever you want it to be. Your wise
being may be your higher power. This
exercise is an excellent way to contact
your higher power also.
Settle comfortably into the couch. Feel
it supporting your back. Place your feet
firmly on the floor. Feel the floor supporting you. Now close your eyes and
become aware of your body. Notice
how your body is feeling right now.
First, put your attention on your feet
and imagine relaxing them. Breathe
into them and feel them relaxing and
loosening.
Now put your attention on your ankles
and the calves of your legs and gently
relax them. Feel them relaxing and
loosening.
Now be aware of your thighs and your
hips. Relax the upper part of your legs
and your whole pelvic area. Feel them
relax and loosen.
Gently breathe into the lower part of
your body and feel it become very relaxed.
Now concentrate on your abdomen and
your stomach, the area of your internal
organs, and imagine all your organs
relaxing, functioning easily, comfortable, healthfully, and smoothly.
Relax your chest and relax your shoulders, your arms, your hands, and your
fingers. Feel any tension seeping
through your fingers and leaving you.
Put your awareness in your neck and
throat, and imagine this part of your
body relaxing completely. If there is
any tension in the area, imagine it
flowing down through your arms and
out your fingers, out onto the floor and
down into the earth.
And now relax your head, feel the tension leaving your scalp, feel your face
loosen, relax your ears, and relax your
eyelids. Relax your jaw and feel it
loosen.
Let your awareness scan through your
entire body, from head to toe, from toe
to head, and feel your entire body
deeply relaxed ...imagine that you can
feel life energy flowing smoothly and
freely through your entire body. If any
area still feels tight or tense, gently

release it and feel that energy flowing
through it.
Take a deep breath, and as you breathe
out, release any last holding that you
are doing in your body. Feel your body
totally relax.
Take another deep breath, and as you
breathe out, relax your mind. Pretend
that your mind is just another muscle in
your body that you can now relax. You
don’t have to hold on to any thought.
You can 'not think'. You can let everything go right now, and let your mind
become very quiet and slow, even a
little bit out of focus. Just notice your
thoughts and release them. Don’t stay
focused on your thoughts. Release
each thought as soon as you notice it.
Imagine your mind being like a still
lake or pond, so peaceful there’s not
even a ripple on the surface.
Take another deep breath, and as you
breathe out, move your awareness into
a very deep place inside of you.... imagine your are walking down a beautiful path in nature, feeling the peace and
beauty of nature around you..As you
walk, you gradually feel more and
more relaxed and open. And you come
into your inner sanctuary, which may
be a meadow, a mountaintop, a spot in
the woods, a cave, a beach -- anywhere
you desire it to be..
This place is a very peaceful, beautiful, safe place for you to be. It’s a very
private place. It’s yours. You carry it in
your imagination. No one else can
come here unless invited.
Take a few moments just to be, and feel
and see, to be aware of your sanctuary
and how it feels to be there...walk
around, feel the air, notice the other
living beings, the plants or animals or
birds. And now find a place in your
sanctuary to make yourself very comfortable and at home. You can sit down
if you wish..
