5. STOP EVE-TEASING
We collected
data, statistics
and created a
Power point
presentation that
would help us
during our Group
Discussions with
students .
The legal redress
was thoroughly
researched by us
to strengthen our
resource base.
Though Indian law doesn't use the term 'eve-teasing', victims usually take
recourse to-
Section 298 (A) and (B) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which
sentences a man found guilty of making a girl or woman the target of
obscene gestures, remarks, songs or recitation for a maximum tenure of
three months.
Section 292 of the IPC clearly spells out that showing pornographic or
obscene pictures, books or slips to a woman or girl draws a fine of
Rs.2000 with two years of rigorous imprisonment for first offenders. In
case of repeated offence, when and if proved, the offender will be
slapped with a fine of Rs.5000 with five years imprisonment.
Under Section 509 of the IPC, obscene gestures, indecent body
language and acidic comments directed at any woman or girl carries a
penaltyof rigorous imprisonment for one year or a fine or both.
6. We conducted a survey wherein we gave
questionnaires separately to boys and girls and
asked them to fill it. Then we analyzed all entries
and found out that-
Among girls, 52.9% were not aware of the legal redress
for eve teasing .
71.1% said they preferred ignoring the perpetrators
rather than raising a cry when teased.
22.2% said they had never been eve-teased, which is
not possible, hence it proves many cases go unreported.
Among boys , all said that they have witnessed eve
teasing.
Only 11.1% said they have helped a victim
65% said they do it for pleasure.
The main reasons for eve teasing as stated by boys
were hormonal changes and inhibition or under
confidence in the girls.
7. The students made
posters , badges
and designed soft
boards .
We gave a
presentation to
the students of
Class XI and XII
followed by a
Group Discussion.
A signature
campaign was
carried out and
students pledged
their support.
8. There is little freedom for them and they fear that their
independence will be further curtailed.
In case they do approach elders, they are blamed for the
incident and the perpetrators go scot free.
It leads to annoyance, anxiety, anger, embarrassment, loss
of confidence ,fear and psychological disorders .
The victim feels unsafe and deprived of her rights.
She develops a fear of venturing outdoors in future.
The incident can cause irreparable damage to her psyche
with life long scars.
Boys are not taught social etiquette & how to interact with
women .
Lack of parental advice and right values.
There is inaction by the police and the victims are
condemned by the people.
Eve teasers either have a history of disturbed/violent
childhood or see women ill treated at home.
10. Plays spreading the
message against Eve
Teasing were
performed in our
school during the
school assembly, in
other schools and at
a mall in the
vicinity.
We got a very
enthusiastic
response from the
audience and they
said that the
message was
conveyed well.
11. Prerna is a school for
the unprivileged girls
coming from
neighboring slums.
We empowered these
students telling them
about the legal
redress available.
We interacted with
the students of Seth
M.R Jaipuria school
and they pledged
their support to the
cause.
12. The core
committee along
with some other
students
performed street
plays in the Fun
Republic mall,
Gomti Nagar.
A signature
campaign was
carried out and
the public sported
badges supporting
the cause.
Many people
across all age
groups supported
the cause and
voiced their
opinion.
The students
interviewed various
people in the mall.
13. A page aimed to
garner mass support
was created. We
sent requests to as
many people as we
could reach, to
support this cause
with a request that
this chain should
continue and people
from all walks of
life can express
their solidarity with
us and help in
spreading this
message far and
wide.

14. A request letter was handed over to the Station Incharge Gomti
Nagar Police Station in which we apprised him of this initiative of
the students against EVE TEASING.
We requested him that there should be more cops in mufti
deployed around colleges, parks, malls and shopping areas.
Increased vigil and patrolling specially by women police officers
would be a real deterrent and perhaps the victim would feel
more confident in sharing her problem more openly.
To ensure that policemen themselves do not indulge in any such
acts.
To take immediate action if any case is reported to the police
station.
He assured us of his full cooperation.
15. With this campaign we were able to reach out to around 2500 people .
Community support for our campaign helped in motivating us
to strive harder and bring about a positive change in
the lives of girls and women in our area.
We pledged never to indulge in such lowly acts and
treat women as equals.
