Welcome…Please feel free to ask questions, push back, and participate
This is just a basic overview of what we’re going to cover todayBe genuine! People will want to connect with YOU and not the persona you think you should put out there. This is so important – hashtags are how people find and talk to each other Have some fun, but stay on topic most of the time.Do a mix, the mix is best Just like in life! People like people who are helpful, not people who just self-promoteBest way to learn is to connect with peopleDon’t post something from a long time ago, unless you post it with an explanation (“Oldie but a goodie…”)Best way to make sure you consistently check-in. This makes it so easy.
There is something to be said for interacting in real time. Make sure to check your Twitter account once or twice a day to reply to people, look through your home feed, and just generally check-in. Be responsive! Join in conversations! Ask good questions! Let your personality show!It is so important to be genuine and show you’re a real person on Twitter! Don’t just set and forget tweets. Setting tweets is a convenience to help you use twitter better, its not meant to replace you actually being on Twitter.
POLL: How do you use hashtags on Twitter right now?
Hashtags are a way of following and categorizing a conversation
Explain what some of these hashtags mean, tell them there are more in the resources at the endACTIVITY: Go to Twitter now and search for one of these hashtags. Click on at least one link to read later.
Use One or Two Hashtags per Tweet for Increased Engagement. Any more than that, you lose people. POLL: Why do you think that is?
Short message such as, “I just found a great language arts lesson plan!”Link to the main content. Since a tweet can only have 140 characters, most tweeters include a link to the main content. In the example above, a link would be provided to take you to the lesson plan. In addition, links are almost always shortened using a URL shortening service such as bit.ly. These services take a long website address and squash it down to as few characters as possible. When you only have 140 characters to work with, you don’t want the majority to be a used for a link.Hashtags. Hashtags provide a way to search millions of tweets and find content relevant to you. Here’s how it works. In the tweet message, the author types # plus a key search word. An example would be #edtech. Then, users around the world can search Twitter for “#edtech.” All recent tweets with #edtech will be found. POLL: What is the 80/20 rule? (Enter your answer in Chat. If you don’t know, guess.)Ok, who knows what I mean by that?It means that 80% of the time, your tweets are on-point, and 20% of the time, you just have fun
POLL: What kind of scheduling services have you tried? What do you use now, if any? Using services like HootSuit, Buffer, or TweetDeckI happen to like using HootSuite, so I’m going to use this service as my “protagonist,” but there are many others. With a free account, you canl ink up to 5 services! These services are great for building a twitter presence without interrupting your day-today life much. They help you tweet consistently. Use HootSuite “AutoScheduler” to spread out tweets for you, or time your tweets to coincide with your peak readership times by using a service like Tweriod.com (next slide)They are also great for following certain Hashtag conversations. Simply set the search as a permanent panel so you see it whenever you log-in.
Find peak times with Tweriod, Buffer, or HootSuite auto-schedulerTake a poll, what times are participants on Twitter or general social media? But also be responsive & “real” (next slide)POLL:When do you use social media?
Use lists, which you can make public or private, to curate lists of people and/or organizations that may be useful to you. For instance, you may curate a private list of colleagues that you check to keep updated on the ongoings in your field. Or you may have a public list of education organizations that you enjoy following and that others with similar interests may enjoy as well.
Being giving in social media, as in life, is a core guiding principle to get the most out of it. By Retweeting (RT – either by using the symbol or by copying and pasting with a prefix), recommending other users on Follow Friday (#FF), Connecting people who may like each other on Weave Wednesday (this is a new one, #WeaveWed), you’re showing people that you’re listening and appreciate them. Just like in life, this will mean many of them pay more attention to you in return. Connect – follow people you want following you, some will follow you back!
Look at who people you like are followingFollow people who contribute to hashtag conversations you followUse services like Twitter’s Advanced Search, Twiangulate and WeFollow
POLL: Does anyone use Klout or know what it is?
Staying connected on the go is one of the easiest ways to make sure you get to most out of Twitter
