  1. 1. SUCCESS MODELS AND CASE STUDIES OF FARMER TO FARMER EXTENSION Dr. J. Diraviam Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR Krishi Vigyan Kendra Pulutheri Village, R.T. 3. 3. SPREAD OF SSI TECHNOLOGY  Participated in the On Farm testing programme of the KVK, in which, I took up SSI sugarcane seedling planting in one acre of my field.  I followed the 5 ft row spacing and the space between plant to plant was 2 ft. The growth was excellent after 4 months. I wanted my field to be a model field and due to this I took more care in bringing up the crop to my satisfaction.  In the last 18 months more than 2000 farmers from across Tamilnadu have visited my field and I was very happy to explain to them about this new technology so that the farmers can save money, time and water by adopting this SSI technology.
  4. 4. SPREAD OF SSI TECHNOLOGY •I established the shadenet nursery unit in an area of 1500 sft investing own money of Rs 40000 to produce 30000 seedlings per batch in the month of Oct 2010. •I have been authorized by EID Parry Sugar Factory for supply of sugarcane seedlings. Subsequently, I expanded the area of the shadenet nursery by 3000 sft with the financial support from Sugar factory during Sep 2012. •So far, 7 lakh sugarcane chip bud seedlings have been produced covering 7 varieties of sugarcane.
  5. 5. SSI NURSERY RAISING
  6. 6. SPREAD OF SSI TECHNOLOGY •These sugarcane seedlings were supplied to over 150 farmers from different districts of Tamil Nadu, of which the major districts include Villupuram, Karur, Trichy and Perambalur. •Most of those farmers have taken up SSI planting. Apart from supply of the seedlings, post sales support is also extended to farmers on SSI planting. •The media for the seedlings production is composted cocopeat and it is produced in the farm by composting the coir waste to reduce the cost of production. •I have been giving employment to 6 farm women for the seedlings production.
  7. 7. SPREAD OF SRI TECHNOLOGY  I have also adopted System of Rice Intensification (SRI) technology in my fields for the last two years following a training by KVK and subsequent exposure visits.  After my adoption, now around 10 villages have moved from conventional planting to SRI Method, with 80% adoption in my own village.  The farmers are convinced about the SRI Method of cultivating Paddy.  I have also trained 25 women groups to take up SRI planting since 2011, they have so far planted over 1000 hectares of SRI planting in Karur district in the past 3 years period.

  15. 15. SPREAD OF HIGH DENSITY PLANTING OF BANANA  I came to know about High density planting system in Banana through a demonstration organized in one of the farmer’s field near Kulithalai in Pappackapatti village.  Then, I visited KVK to discuss with SMS Horticulture about this technology. He clearly explained the advantages in HDP Banana.  This technology impressed me very much and I planted a small area on an experimental basis. The same year KVK took organized a demonstration under their FLD programme in my field during 2010-2011.
  16. 16. SPREAD OF HIGH DENSITY PLANTING OF BANANA  The result in the small area helped to extend the area to 1.5 Ha in the year 2011-2012. In this method plant 2 suckers / pit at a spacing of 2.25 x 3.m (1050 plants/acre).  I was amazed with the result of adoption in large area, as the net income I received at the end of the crop due to increased number of plants per ha by 40% resulted in increased net income of 35%. At present I have extended this system to 2ha area.  In the past 2 years, my field was visited by over 200 farmers and I also discussed about this technology to my fellow farmers in and around Kulithalai. After discussing with me, most of them visited my field and now they had converted their planting to this new system.
