Mirrors
a reflective surface, now
typically of glass coated with a
metal amalgam, that reflects
a clear image.
LAW OF RELECTION
-states that with respect to the
NORMAL LINE, the ANGLE OF INCIDENCE
and the ANGLE OF REFLECTION of a
reflected light are EQUAL.
Mirrors are categorized into:
•Plane
•Curve
Plane mirrors
A plane mirror is a mirror with a
flat (planar) reflective surface.
Curved mirror
A curved mirror is a mirror with a curved reflecting
surface. The surface may be either:
-CONVEX (bulging outward)
-CONCAVE (bulging inward)
Most curved mirrors have surfaces that are shaped like
part of a sphere, but other shapes are sometimes used
in optical devices.
CONCAVE MIRROR
• Concave mirrors are used:
- in reflecting telescopes.
-provide a magnified image of
the face for applying make-up or
shaving. In illumination applications,
in torches, headlamps and spotlights,
-used to form optical cavities,
which are important in laser
construction
-landing aid system of
modern aircraft carriers also uses a
concave mirror.

center of curvature and the
vertex of the mirror
Normal A line perpendicular to the
surface of a mirror
TYPES OF RAYS
•Parallel rays
•Radial rays
•Focal rays
Parallel ray
-travels in a path that is
parallel to the principal
axis. It is reflected through
the focal point.
Radial ray
-travels in a path that is
going to the center of
curvature. It is reflected back
along the incident path.
Focal ray
-travels in a path that is
passing through the focal
point. It is reflected in a path
that is parallel to the
principal axis.
