called “short form” to separate them from films

4. Early music videos
In 1929 Bessie Smith appeared in a short film called
St Louis Blues, this was shown in theatres in 1932.
In 1956 “Stranger in Paris” by Tony Bennett was
played on UK and US stations which lead to him
claiming that he created the first music video.
In 1959 J.P junior, also known as “The big blooper”
was the first to make a rock music video according to
the internet accuracy project.
5. The modern era
Effects such as chroma-key is used during the
development of modern music videos.
The high quality colour of cameras allow music artists to
create promotional videos quickly and cheaper.
The UK’s ‘Top Of The Pops’ created a competition
between record labels because of the importance of
promoting music videos.
By the 80’s it had become standard to release a music
video to accompany a new single.
6. MTV
MTV is a music channel that first launched on
August 1st 1981.
The first music video to be aired on the channel was
‘Video killed the radio star’ by The Buggles.
Michael Jackson was the first black artist to have his
song ‘Billie Jean’ aired on the channel.
They have broadcasted TV shows such as ‘Jersey
Shore’ and ‘Geordie Shore’.

The cost of a music video varies and depends on
many factors
The highest cost of a music video can range from
$500k to $7m.
Michael Jackson’s ‘Scream’ 1995 is one of the most
expensive music videos made.
