In this talk, we will share how a small team at Intuit moved Docker from local to production serving real and critical workloads. We will share how we addressed the organization challenges of running Docker at large enterprises by building a business case for a pilot project to prove the value of containers and its real world application. Next, we will share how we solved the technical challenges that present themselves when taking Docker from local to production in a corporate data center. We will share the blueprint for the business case and the associated pilot which laser focused on running stateless back-end services throughout the entire SDLC. Finally, we will highlight our crawl-walk-run approach that allowed us to make inexpensive mistakes before investing in the right areas as our Docker knowledge increased. We will share the major technical issues we encountered, how we overcame them and the lessons we learned.

Presentation by Ian Miell, author of 'Docker in Practice' The adoption of Docker brings with it many challenges, not all of themtechnical. There is a clear vision of Docker regularly articulated thatencompasses microservices, decoupled applications, agile and continuous deliveryand integration, and DevOps. But the application of this vision often flounders when confronted by the legacy structures of working and successful businesses. This talk draws on the experienced gained from several attempts to lead changewithin technical organisations. The speaker experienced both failure to effectchange (through productization of a bespoke software stack, and the introduction of Erlang), and success (moving to a Continuous Improvement modelof complex software maintenance). These experiences informed a successful drive to Docker as the build and delivery system of a 700-strong software company,with significant efficiency improvements. As with most historical revolutions, the integration of the vision with realityresulted in corners cut and principles compromised in order to effect change.This talk is a discussion of the lessons learned from these experiences in an effort to help the listener clarify and overcome the unique challenges their own organisation brings to making change happen.

These systems need the ability to provision and manage resources, place workloads, and adapt in the presence of failures. In particular, container orchestrators make it easy for anyone to manage their container workloads using their cloud-based or on-premise infrastructure. Unfortunately, most of these systems have not been architected with security in mind.Compromise of a less-privileged node can allow an attacker to escalate privileges to either gain control of the whole system, or to access resources it shouldn't have access to. In this talk, we will go over how Docker has been working to build secure blocks that allow you to run a least privilege infrastructure - where any participant of the system only has access to the resources that are strictly necessary for its legitimate purpose. No more, no less.

Migrating apps out of Virtual Machines is difficult, especially distributed apps with multiple components, and even more so when the components run on different operating systems. But with the Docker platform and the Image2Docker tools - which extract Linux and Windows apps from existing VMs into containers - it's easy. In this session we'll take a PHP front-end application running in a Linux VM, which connects to a .NET Web Service running in a Windows VM, and convert the whole stack to Docker automatically. Then we'll run the app on a hybrid Docker Datacenter cluster, where we can manage the Windows and Linux components from a single pane of glass.

But recently a diverse set of open source projects have taken standard programming practice and applied it to systems problems, producing software that looks very different. Big Data technologies enable us to build the digital brain of smart systems. I will illustrate with examples how we build a digital brain by collecting data from a large number of sensors and using the brain to find value in that data. We build a Data Lake using cutting edge technology from Pivotal and use it to store large amounts of sensor and other data. Then we can find patterns in that data by applying the Data Science methodology using sophisticated machine learning and statistical algorithms customized to run on big data within the Data Lake. Armed with these patterns the system can detect anomalies and respond in an appropriate manner. Data Science combined with sensors and actuators can make a system smart!

Browser cache, html5 application cache, sophisticated reverse proxies like Varnish, and the evolution of CDNs have all elevated caching as the single most effective tool for creating high performing and scalable web applications. Using live demos, we will dive into some advance caching concepts that will enable you to squeeze the most benefits from this caching ecosystem, including: Prefresh Prefetching for sites Prefetching for single page apps Burst caching: caching for an extremely short burst of time, even a few seconds Dynamic page caching Cache invalidation and revalidation However, with caching power comes caching responsibility. If not implemented correctly, these advanced techniques can degrade or even break site functionality. "All happy cloud deployments are alike; each unhappy cloud deployment is unhappy in its own way." — Leo Tolstoy, Site Reliability Engineer At Gruntwork, I've had the chance to see the cloud adoption journeys of hundreds of companies, from tiny startups to Fortune 50 giants. I've seen those journeys go well. I've seen those journeys go poorly. In this talk, I discuss a few of the ways cloud adoption can go horribly wrong (massive cost overruns, endless death marches, security disasters), and more importantly, how you can get it right. To help you get it right, we looked at the cloud journeys that were successful and extracted from them the patterns they had in common. We distilled all this experience down into something called the Gruntwork Production Framework, which defines five concrete steps you can follow to adopt the cloud at your own company—and hopefully, to end up with your very own happy cloud deployment.

My presentation from Devoxx Poland 2016 conference - the newest, slightly revised version. For many years I was a software developer. I would concentrate on the code, software projects and the interactions with my closes team and the users. I was sure that Agile solves all world’s problems. I would laugh over Scott Adam’s Dilbert comics with his Point Hair Boss. Life was simple, life was good. Now for 8+ years I have been running a software company, not a small one anymore. I became myself a full-time boss who only codes sometimes at home or during hackathons. This session is about sharing with you those critical lessons which I painfully learnt when trying to grow into this new role - transitioning from being a software engineer into being an entrepreneur and top manager. Wheres not all of the lessons may or will (if you dream about your own startup) apply to your case, being aware of them may save you tons of time, energy, money or even help you to avoid the total disaster - burying your own company or dreams. And after all, sharing war stories from the past is fun … when these stories are the past.

As infrastructure as code (IaC) becomes widely adopted by users with heterogenous skillsets, and as IaC codebases become larger and larger, it becomes harder to track drift. Drift is a deviation between the actual infrastructure state and the IaC codebase. It causes issues for security posture management, collaborative work, and maintenance. There are a lot of juicy stories from the trenches to be told on infrastructure drift. Sure enough, we all do GitOps by the book! Or we all have the right processes in place. But we also have to interact with other teams. We also have to grant some level of access to our infrastructures to some services or tools that may eventually generate uncontrolled changes. You can’t efficiently improve what you don’t track. We track coverage for unit tests, why not infrastructure as code coverage? How can we make sure our infrastructure code matches our actual infrastructure state? In this talk, using Terraform with AWS resources, I will show how infrastructure drift can go undetected despite our best efforts or tooling and cause issues and end the talk by showing our own free and open source tool driftctl, (just released under Apache-2.0 licence) that tracks IaC coverage and warns of infrastructure drift.

Anyone interested in building a deep learning model is only a quick search away from a number of clear and well written tutorials that will take them from zero knowledge to having a working image classifier. But what happens when you need to deploy these models in a production setting? At Salesforce, we use TensorFlow models to help us provide customers with insights into their data, and we do this as close to real-time as possible. Designing these systems in a scalable manner requires overcoming a number of design challenges, but the core component is Docker. Docker enables us to design highly scalable systems by allowing us to focus on service interactions, rather than how our services will interact with the hardware. Docker is also at the core of our test infrastructure, allowing developers and data scientists to build and test the system in an end to end manner on their local machines. While some of this may sound complex, the core message is simplicity - Docker allows us to focus on the aspects of the system that matter, greatly simplifying our lives.

Our old architecture, a big ball of mud shared-database integration, just wasn’t cutting it - it was killing our agility. Over the past two years, our small team has adopted a microservice style architecture, using Docker with docker-compose and environment files as our deployment strategy for all new development. We’ve discovered the joys of using containers for identical dev, staging, and production environments. We work closely with scientists: much of the code we’re running has complicated and conflicting library dependencies. We successfully managed to bring all the monolithic problem to the cloud and created a nightmare for ourselves. We then started applying microservices architecture principles and started breaking the monolithic into small services. Very soon we realized that we need a better packaging/deployment tool. Docker looked like a magical solution to our problem. Since its adoption, It has not only solved the deployment problem for us but has made a deep impact on different aspects of SDLC. It allowed us to use heterogeneous technology stacks, simplified development environment setup, simplified our testing strategy, improved our speed of delivery, and made our developers more productive. Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
