2. The learner will be able to better
understand the complexities of a
child forced to cope with Sexual
Abuse, Child Abuse, and having a
parent suffering from severe Mental
Illness. They will have a better
understanding of why it is often
times, so difficult to
communicate/reach victims of Child
Abuse. In my case, my mother was a
“Chronic Paranoid Schizophrenia,”
and spent months and years in State
Hospitals. (Mt. Sinai Hospital in NY,
the then-notorious mental unit at
Bellevue Hospital, and state facilities
in Georgia from the age of 16, on)
To Put a “human Face,” which is my own
personal experience of being a victim of severe
Child Abuse and Child Sexual Abuse. Children
that have been sexually abuse, Children of
severe Mentally Ill Parents at times, have an
extremely difficult time communicating. My goal
is to explain for the person attending the
conference of the difficulties of recovering from
the shame, the guilt, and the embarrassment as
a child victim. The fact that at times children are
incapable of expressing their emotion, and
suppressed feelings are real. For example in my
case, feeling dirty, and believing my “secrets”
were so horrendous that I would take them to
my grave. I will discuss one of the hallmark
symptoms of abused children, and that is
blocking out the memories, a skill that sadly I
mastered as a child. Will discuss how my way of
coping with the pain was to declare to those
closest to me, that I would never live past the
age of forty-five. Will discuss how that was my
way of relieving myself of the inner torment.
How the guilt can turn to smoldering
resentment.

3. Learner will have a much better
understanding of the life-saving work
that they do, day in, day out on
behalf of children. That because of
them, society is slowly doing away
with the stigma associated with sex
abuse. I actually salute the Foster
Care Parents, Social Workers, and
Law enforcement officials to show
that one person that cares, can save a
life, and that these people are the
real heroes, not the sports figures we
see on TV every night. This objective
is to increase the power each
individual brings to their interactions
with children, youth, and families.
Attendees will leave the event feeling
motivated, inspired, better informed,
and empowered to help children.
Will actually randomly select some members of
the audience and bring them up to the
microphone, asking why do they do what they
do to help children. This is a very powerful way
of connecting with the audience and reminding
them with positive reinforcement, of why they
decided to dedicate their lives helping children. I
spend a good time reinforcing the message of
those attending the conference are extremely
positive/productive members of society, and I
thank them for what they do on behalf of
children. That they are a voice for the voiceless.
This is part two to objective number one.
Attendees will be able to better understand for
the future, not just the physical component of
Child Sexual Abuse, but from the perspective of
the severe damage that can’t be seen on the
surface. The mental anguish of a child victim.
This is accomplished by discussing in great
personal detail, my own life. To put forward,
which is a heart-wrenching first person account
of abuse/and dealing with a mentally ill parent.
Will discuss my mother’s life as it relates to
mental illness. “My mother was not a demon,
but she saw demons, and if a demon exists in
this story, it is society’s collective mistreatment
and misunderstanding of mental illness.” This
includes pointing out her electrical shock
treatments, use of straight jackets, and how she
had to have 24 hour passes just to come how. I
will also talk about in detail Child Sexual Abuse
Prevention Strategies, but this time, from the
unique perspective of a child victim who is now a
grown man.
