The Internet allows individuals and groups to communicate and collaborate in ways never before possible. Students are coming to school as experienced Internet users, communicators, and publishers, many being a lot more tech-savvy than their teachers and parents. You will learn about today’s students and today’s technologies; ways to develop and participate in educational learning networks; and methods for creating meaningful educational experiences through tools such as Wikis, blogs, and social networking and media sites.

This research from 2009, presented at IADIS 2009 conference in Portugal looks at Web 2.0 accessibility challenges by examining the social networking site experiences of a group of users with visual impairments compared with a group of sighted users. Note that since 2009, things have improved considerably but you may like to replicate approach and update findings.

This presentation (rescued from the archives) was presented at the 2007 School Library Association of New Zealand Aotearoa Conference. It challenges library staff to reconsider their role in information literacy and how to ensure students and teachers are equipped to navigate the new information landscape. It asks for experts in contemporary information literacy issues, such as online identity, digital rights, social networking, personalisation and collaborative content, rather then expatriates continuing to do things as they did in ‘the old country’?

Presentation at the annual Emerging Technologies for Online Learning conference focusing on networked scholarship. The concept of networked scholarship is expressed in different ways in the literature, ranging from digital scholarship to social scholarship to open scholarship. In this presentation, I discussed two themes that have arisen from my 3+ years of qualitative and ethnographic studies into the practices of higher education scholars. Both of these themes help us make better sense of scholars’ digital participation and networked scholarship. They also help us better describe online scholarly networks and the lives and practices of digital scholars. The first theme refers to the notion of scholars using networks to enact digital/open scholarship and circumvent restrictions to the sharing of knowledge. The second theme is one that I am still developing. Specifically, in my research I found that social media and online social networks function as places where some academics express and experience care.

Second only to the general concept of Web 2.0, virtual worlds are the source of more articles in PubMed than any other emerging social technology. Of the many virtual worlds, Second Life (a free, open source 3d virtual world platform) is the one with the strongest presence in health care communities, from patient groups and medical education to research and professional meetings. Second Life can enable health systems to create either public or secure private spaces for functions from patient education, outreach, staff training, remote meetings, or more. As with any social technology, understanding the context and norms of the online space are essential to making institutional engagement a success. In this session, we will look at case studies illustrating how some organizations have used Second Life for communication, collaboration and community engagement.

: Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, will discuss the Project’s most recent findings about Americans use the internet and their mobile devices to learn, share, and create information. He will discuss how the changed media environment is affecting learners’ expectations about the availability of information and the ways in which learning takes place. In this new environment, the traditional boundaries between home and school, teacher and pupil, public and private are breaking down and that is affecting the way learning occurs. Lee will describe how Pew Internet has looked at these subjects and the ways in which schools and families are responding to them.
