1. The Link Between Being
Overweight and Arthritis
By Dr. Alimorad Farshchian
2. Introduction
• Dr. Almira Farshchian helped to pioneer orthopedic
regenerative medicine, and today is a leading authority
in the field. Among Dr. Alimorad Farshchian’s areas of
focus is helping those who suffer from arthritis.
Arthritis is a very common condition that affects a large
percentage of older people. Since it leads to difficulty
walking and participating in other daily activities, it can
have a negative effect on quality of life. While many
factors may contribute to the development of arthritis, a
major one is carrying excess weight.
3. Arthritis
• Weight-bearing joints, such as the knees and hips,
are only meant to carry so much, and being
overweight can cause undue strain on them. Over
time, excess weight causes the joints to wear down
at a faster rate, resulting in premature joint damage
and the onset of arthritis pain. Since 70 percent of
Americans are considered to be overweight, arthritis
is very common, particularly of the knees. In fact, 60
percent of people in the United States age 60 and
over have this form of arthritis. Therefore, to reduce
the risk, taking steps to get down to a healthier
weight is highly recommended.
