3. What is MIS?
• MIS is an organized integration of hardware and software
technologies, data, processes, and human elements. It is a
software system that focuses on the management of
information technology to provide efficient and effective
strategic decision making.
• What is MIS?
• MIS is the acronym for Management Information
Systems. MIS is a set of procedures which, when executed,
provides information to support decision making.
4. A Management Information
System is
• An integrated user-machine system
• For providing information
• To support the operations, management, analysis, and
decision-making functions
• In an organization
5.
6. The system utilizes
• Computer hardware & software
• Manual procedures
• Models for analysis, planning, control, and decision making,
and
• A database
8. Meaning of MIS
• To the managers, Management Information System is an
implementation of the organizational systems and procedures.
To a programmer it is nothing but file structures and file
processing. However, it involves much more complexity.
• The three components of MIS provide a more complete and
focused definition where
• System suggests integration and holistic view
• Information stands for processed data
• Management is the ultimate user, the decision makers.
9. • People Resources: People are required for the operation of all
information system.
• Data Resources: Database holds processed and organized
data.
• Software Resources: It includes all sets of information
processing instruction.
• Hardware Resources: Include all physical devices and
materials used in information processing.
• Process: is a step undertaken to achieve a goal.
10. Management information system
can thus be analysed as follows −
Management
• Management covers the planning, control, and administration
of the operations of a concern.
• The top management handles planning; the middle
management concentrates on controlling; and the lower
management is concerned with actual administration.
• Management is the art of getting things done through and
with the people in formally organised groups.
12. • Information, in MIS, means the processed data that helps the
management in planning, controlling and operations.
• Data means all the facts arising out of the operations of the
concern.
• Data is processed i.e. recorded, summarized, compared and
finally presented to the management in the form of MIS
report.
• Information is data that is processed and is presented in a
form which assists decision-making. It may contain an element
of surprise, reduce uncertainty or provoke a manager to
initiate an action.
Information
14. • Data is processed into information with the help of a system.
A system is made up of inputs, processing, output and
feedback or control.
• Thus MIS means a system for processing data in order to give
proper information to the management for performing its
functions.
• A system is an orderly grouping of interdependent
components linked together according to a plan to achieve a
specific goal. The term system is the most loosely held term in
management literature because of its use in different
contexts.
System
17. Management Information System or 'MIS' is a planned
system of collecting, storing, and disseminating data in
the form of information needed to carry out the
functions of management.
• “A formal method of collecting timely information in a
presentable form in order to facilitate effective decision
making and implementation, in order to carryout
organisational operations for the purpose of achieving
the organisational goals”.
—Walter I. Kennevan
Definition of MIS
18. Definition of MIS
• “An MIS is a system designed to provide selected decision oriented
information needed by management to plan, control and evaluate
the activities of the corporation. It is designed within a framework
that emphasises profit planning, performance planning and control
at all levels.”
• “A Management Information System is an organized portfolio of
formal systems for obtaining, processing, and delivering information
in support of the business operations and management of an
organization.”
---------- Zwass (1992)
19. • Management Information System (MIS) is an integrated
man/machine system for providing information to hold up the
operations, management and decision making functions in an
organization.
---------G.B. Davis
Definition of MIS
20. Objectives of MIS
The goals of an MIS are to implement the organizational
structure and dynamics of the enterprise for the purpose of
managing the organization in a better way and capturing the
potential of the information system for competitive advantage.
Following are the basic objectives of an MIS −
• Capturing Data
• Processing Data
• Information Storage
• Information Retrieval
• Information Propagation
21.
22. • Capturing Data −
• Capturing contextual data, or operational information that will
contribute in decision making from various internal and
external sources of organization.
• MIS capture data from various internal and external sources of
the organization. Data capturing may be manual or through
computer terminals.
Objectives of MIS
23. • Processing Data − The captured data is processed into
information needed for planning, organizing, coordinating,
directing and controlling functionalities at strategic, tactical
and operational level.
• The captured data is processed to convert into the required
information. Processing of data is done by such activities as
calculating, sorting, classifying, and summarizing.
• Processing data means −
• making calculations with the data
• sorting data
• classifying data and
• summarizing data
Objectives of MIS
24. • Information Storage −
• MIS stores the processed or unprocessed data for future use.
If any information is not immediately required, it is saved as
an organization record, for later use.
• Information or processed data need to be stored for future
use.
• Information Retrieval −
• The system should be able to retrieve this information from
the storage as and when required by various users.
• Information Propagation − Information or the finished
product of the MIS should be circulated to its users
periodically using the organizational network.
Objectives of MIS
25. Role of MIS
• A management information system (MIS) plays an
important role in business organizations.
• What is MIS role: There are many roles of MIS and some of
the important MIS role are discussed below:
• Decision making
• Coordination among the department
• Finding out Problems
• Comparison of Business Performance
• Strategies for an Organization
26.
27. Decisionmaking
• Management Information System (MIS) plays a significant role
in the decision-making process of any organization.
• In any organization, a decision is made on the basis of relevant
information which can be retrieved from the MIS.
Role of MIS
28. Coordination among the department
• Management Information System satisfy multiple need of an
organization across the different functional department.
Role of MIS
29. Finding out Problems
• As we know that MIS provides relevant information about
every aspect of activities.
• Hence, if any mistake is made by the management then MIS,
information will help in finding out the solution to that
problem.
Role of MIS
30. Comparison of Business Performance
• MIS store all past data and information in its Database. That
why the management information system is very useful to
compare business organization performance.
Role of MIS
31. Strategies for an Organization
• Today each business is running in a competitive market. An
MIS supports the organization to evolve appropriate strategies
for the business to assent in a competitive environment.
