Philippines Transport Situation

• 5.9 million registered vehicles
  in 2008
• Motorization is increasing at
  6% per year, with motorcycles/
  tricycles driving growth with
  11.6%
• Road subsector dominates
  both passenger (98%) and
  freight traffic (58%) in 2006

Metro Manila Transport Situation

• Covers 636 km2 including 16
  cities and 1 municipality
• About 30% of all vehicles are
  registered in Metro Manila
• Served by 3 light-rail and 1
  heavy rail (commuter) with a
  combined ridership reaching
about a million riders per day
• Dominated by several public
  transport modes, including
  buses, jeepneys, megataxis, and
  tricycles, which are not
  integrated

                Urban Transport Challenges

 Cities are growing (size and population)
     Motorization rapidly increasing
     Congestion increasing
     Local pollution worsening
     GHG emissions
     Safety worsening
     Oil dependence
 Policies failing to keep up
     Quality of life deteriorating

 Overall Goal of the
 National Strategy:

 Reduction of the annual growth rate of energy consumption
and air pollution and associated GHG emissions from the
transport sector in urban areas of the country

 Mainstream environmentally sustainable transport
(EST), which involves, among others, the promotion of
transportation systems of low carbon intensity and shift towards
the use of more sustainable transport modes
