It was a chant used by rebel fighters while they fought for their freedom.<br />Yellow Journalism was also known as the Yellow Press. Their publications featured comics and the Yellow Kid. The publications were used by William Randolph Hearst to increase the hatred of the Spanish government.<br />Remember the Maine was a slogan used by the American people in newspapers and speeches to remember the battleship Maine that exploded in the Havana Harbor.<br />US Battleship Maine was sent out to protect the Americans who lived in Cuba, under the request of President William McKinley. Spain was accused of blowing up the battleship, which killed most of the officers on board the ship.<br />10th Cavalry Regiment was paired up with National Guard units and the Rough Riders in General Shafter’s army. The 9th and 10th Cavalry consisted mostly of African Americans. <br />General Valeriano Weyler was responsible for starving the rebels and depriving their recruits. He also sent many Cubans to reconcentration camps after (Cuban) Jose Marti started a war with Spain.<br />Enrique dupuy DeLome was known for writing the “Worst Insult to the United States in Its History” when he called President McKinley “a weak and stupid politician” in a letter, which was published in the Journal.<br />The Rough Riders were a cavalry composed of westerners and rich easterners and run by Theodore Roosevelt. They paired with the 9th and 10th cavalry and were recognized for their fighting in the battles for Kettle and Juan hills.<br />The Treaty of Paris ended the war between Spain and the United States in 1898 and sold the Philippines to the United States.<br />The Teller Amendment stopped the United States from taking Cuba. <br />Many events caused the United States to enter the Spanish American war. Some of the events include: When Enrique Dupuy de Lome wrote the letter to Washington D.C and called President McKinley a weak and stupid politician, which angered the Americans. Also, the Americans were angered because they though Spain was responsible for the Maine explosion in the Havana Harbor. One reason why the United States got involved was because they were supporting and protecting the citizens of Cuba while Spain wouldn’t give them their freedom. Some events that were seen as effects of the war were the signing of the Treaty of Paris, Spain giving up the islands of Cuba, Puerto Rico and Guam and the Philippines was sold to the United States. Also, the Teller Amendment was passed by congress and didn’t allow the US to power of Cuba. Another event that occurred as a result of the war was the American debate over imperialism.<br />The Rough Riders and the 10th Cavalry regiment contributed to the war efforts because they played a major role in the battles when they protected the hills of Kettle and San Juan and surrounded Santiago, which eventually caused the Spanish army in Santiago to give up. When the Spanish army located in Santiago surrendered, it made the war easier for the United States to win. <br />
