This document summarizes a presentation given by Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos on the CIPTEC project. The CIPTEC project aimed to make public transport more attractive through collective innovation. It involved partners from 7 European countries. The project identified existing innovations, obtained new ideas through crowdsourcing and co-creation workshops, conducted advanced marketing research, and developed a toolbox. It identified market trends influencing public transport and segmented public transport users. The project is expected to impact public transport by encouraging the adoption of innovation mixes, utilizing ideas from its collective intelligence activities, and adopting a modern marketing perspective to promote public transport.

Advanced Marketing Research
Main objectives in CIPTEC
• to reveal the characteristics of PT innovations deemed most
important by EU citizens and to segment the population of
potential users of PT based on these important ratings.
• to optimize, in the laboratory, behavioral interventions to
increase willingness to use PT.
• to implement the optimized behavioral intervention in a rea-
world setting and to test whether it increase people’s actual PT
use.

Advanced Marketing Research
Main results in CIPTEC
• The segmentation analysis revealed that there are homogenous groups
with different priorities and therefore different needs and driving factors.
7 hidden groups revealed.
• The synergetic value in combining certain innovations in a service, thus
they should be appropriately selected in order to maximize their effects.
• The social labelling technique was fine-tuned and tested in controlled
laboratory conditions and next applied in two field studies. Results
suggest that social labelling increases actual PT use.
• PT sector could adopt a modern marketing perspective that promotes
creativity and innovation with the aim of significantly increasing its
modal share, by attracting new customers at limited extra cost.

ü Certain ideas resulted from CIPTEC may have no great
commercial interest for development, but they could
increase user satisfaction. Here the role of the so-called
social entrepreneurs can be crucial.
ü 4 local workshops have been organised in
ü Thessaloniki, Greece (coordinated by AUTh)
ü Tuscany, Italy (coordinated by TIEMME)
ü Frankfurt, Germany (coordinated by traffiQ)
ü Rotterdam/The Hague, Netherlands (coordinated by MRDH)
inviting social entrepreneurs aiming to find synergies among
Public Transport and Social Entrepreneurs.
