The Mod movement has played a significant part in shaping British culture, and its influence is still felt today in the music & fashion industries. The iconic look is all about having the perfect shirts, Mod jackets & shoes, as well as the attitude to match.
2. The British Mod style emerged out
of London in the 1960s as a
reaction to the tradition of
oppressive values of the 1950s. It
also marked a shift in British youth
taking fashion influence from
countries such as Italy and France,
while at the same time investing in
stylish Vespa and Lambretta
scooters.
This was in sharp contrast to the
Rockers, who looked over to
America for inspiration and proudly
donned themselves out in biker
leather and went for the more
powerful forms of motorbikes.
3. The early Mod style was very much defined by British bands of the time,
particularly by the likes of the Who and the Small Faces. However, the
styles of music that got Mods the most excited was American Soul and
Jamaican Ska music.
This led to an interesting mixture of people at Mod evenings, particularly
as Britain had yet to pass the Race Relations Act and again was seen as
the youth breaking away from the more conservative and traditional values
of the previous decade.

5. Mod Clothing
Mod clothing has played a main
role in the sub-culture since its
formation and will inevitably
continue to do so into the
future. The trick in getting that
modern mod look is to opt for
tailored cuts, elegant suits and
outfits that stand out and the
blending of the casual and the
sophisticated.
It is worth remembering that
the movement was seen as
rebelling against the culture of
the time and therefore it should
not be seen as having any set
rules in place.
6. Coats &
Jackets
The jacket is incredibly versatile and is perfect
for either dressing up or down and looks the
business when paired with a retro polo shirt or
a more traditional long-sleeved shirt, to get
that classic Mod look. If you take a look back
through photos from the 1960s, then you will
notice the majority zipped their bombers half-
way up. Do the same to get that cool, authentic
Mod look.
Of course no Mod style advice would be
complete without mentioning the timeless
classic, the parka. The parka was made
infamous thanks to the likes of Pete Townsend
and is one of the most iconic Mod jackets
available. It is usually worn slightly over-sized
and in the classic dusky green colour. You
should be looking to style it with either a white
or grey polo shirt and a pair of brown Chelsea
boots.
7. Shirts
Both the polo shirt and the traditional
long-sleeved shirt have long played a
role in Mod style. Get that authentic
mod-look by buttoning up all of the
buttons to the top and pairing with a
pair of denim jeans and a plain
Harrington jacket.
If you are looking for that extra touch,
then add a pair of retro sunglasses,
such as Wayfarers into the mix.
8. It seems that no matter where you go
these days, everyone is wearing skinny
jeans. Mods tended to favour the more
tailored European fits, which means
that you should have your eye on a pair
of slim jeans, which offer more comfort
and versatility. However, Mods were
always looking to show off their
footwear, so go for the tapered look at
the bottom and get them rolled up a
little.
Mods also opted for slim or skinny
chinos mixed with bold and striking
patterns, perfectly showing off the
mixture of both the formal and the
casual, which became known as being
quintessentially Mod.
Trousers
9. Footwear
Chelsea boots have long
been associated with the Mod
sub-culture and that is not
going to change any time
soon. These boots are so
versatile and are effortlessly
sleek and stylish. Go for a
pair in classic black leather
and pair them with some slim
fit chinos. Or if you are
looking for something a little
different, then opt for a pair of
brown brogues with a pair of
light-coloured chinos.
10. Hair
Along with Mod clothing, Mod hairstyles are an intrinsic
part of the overall Mod style and image and are currently
enjoying something of a recent revival. There are various
different styles of Mod haircuts to choose from depending
on your own style and face shape.

11. The Steve Marriot
This was perhaps one of the
first proper Mod hairstyles
and is cut into layers,
resulting into a choppy,
different length look that is
typically longer at the front,
the sides and the fringe, with
the back being cut shorter.
The hair is then cut around
the ear or worn ever so
slightly over it. This is then
complemented with a soft
centre parting at the front
which is swept to the sides.
